You might not have NS enabled. The desktop icon's buggy, use the other one.

I don't think that his problem is due to the desktop icon bug. That only warns you that the custom game is not installed (when it actually is).

Client DLL's differing from the servers dll can be cause by a wide variety of problems but generally its an installation issue.

    1. Make sure that both the NS and HL updates are the most recent.
    2. Reinstall the HL update and reboot. Now reinstall the NS update/install file and reboot.
    3. Try the game now.

Notes: I have had poor experience when using the incremental patches released by sierra/valve for HL. I suggest that you download and use the FULL client patches.

Technically, he would not be able to install NS if he was running an out of date version of HL. That client.dll error is mod specific, so if you are not running the NS 1.0 client (you somehow have a bad, old beta, etc. version) and try to connect to a server, you will get that message.

Uninstalling, downloading from a reputable site, and then reinstalling NS, then connecting to a *different* server than previously, will probably take care of everything.

He could have been attempting to connect to a 2.0 beta server also.

Those are for the Playtesters and vets only, and will give you that error. I sometimes get it when I forgot to switch versions.

Just make sure the server you are connecting to is version 1.04

It was the uninstall/reinstall that I was suggesting. Every time I have seen this problem (mostly at our LAN's when I am force installing NS on people's machines <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->), it is because of a botched HL or NS installation.

    edit: I *heart* grammar
