i just recently installed HL and NS on a PC i just built. im using onboard sound, and during the game i get a static type noise. I know its not my headphones or mobo cause i tested it out on BF1942 and the sounds r fine, infact crystal clear, mp3;s play perfectly aswell. anyone know whats wrong? Ive tried turning of digital sound and ive tried it on. no difference.

    Onboard is crap, don't argue with me, it just is

    I had it and I sounded like I had stuffed a pillow in my mouth and was eating at the same time

    Buy a new sound card for about 10 bucks

    I know it works fine for you with other games, but just do it, it's just 10 bucks spent on a cheap sound card, can't go wrong

    worked for me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I had static noise coming from my line-in (TV card) and some i s coming from my DVD rom too, i *fixed* it by disabling CD audio and line in windows volume control (TV card software automatically enables it when starts and disables when exiting).

    yah, basicaly the way to fix stuff like his is to play around with various audio settings. Go into the menu and turn them all off, then go through turning each one on by itself nd see what happens <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I agree, onboard sound really sucks teh fat one. If you can afford it, buy a new soundcard. Even if its just something like an SBLive Value, the sound quality difference will be very noticeable.

    If not you might want to try updating the onboard sound drivers (It's most likely AC97, if this is the case I know that there have been updates to the drivers for this codec recently).

    I have an AC97 thingy as well, but it gave me loaaaaads of static <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    So I bought a cheap little soundcard (soundcard liveplayer 5.1, 6 channels) for about 10 bucks, and now everything is crystal clear and I can turn the sound waaaaay open without any static or background noises.

    Trust me, it's always worth it to buy a real soundcard instead of a "fake" onboard soundcard.

    Cheers

    Yea, even the very good soundcards are cheap compared to other pieces of hardware, and its worth having good soundcard. You musnt (<does such word exist?) have the best one, just some mid class one (the soundblaster Live! is this case, or maybe SB Audigy).

    Some onboard sound cards are fine, they get a bad name because companies like PC World use crap motherboards with crap sound cards, if you have a decent motherboard it should come with a decent 5.1 (or more) sound card.
