Need Help With Ns Text Messages

I'm a poor, simple man in many ways. One of those being that I play NS on a p450 voodoo2 56k.
To get a decent frame-rate, i used to play in 640x480, but when i entered a full TSA/kharaa base the FPS dropped to an unbearable level.
So last week i've bumped down to the next res (i think its 320x240)
This gives better FPS (obviously), but when I recieve 3 'say' or 'team_say' messages on screen, i can't see jack, as the bleedin' messages take up half the screen (and that is NOT an exageration)
I hear there's a console command that can make messages disappear at a faster rate. Does anyone know this command? also, is there anything else i can do? (short of buying stuff for my PC)
And, please, no 'haha sucker i got a 2.0Ghz GeForce 4 setup with 512Mb of considerably-better-than-thou's RAM'. Because, at the end of the day, i've got bigger cajones than you.
Thanks

You have to enter a number to specify how long the text remains on-screen. Eg: hud_saytext_time 1 would make the message stay around for 1 secind instead of the default 5. Hate to point out the obvious, but the command works for me, and I can't see how it wouold not work for someone else.
<span style='color:white'>[edit]</span>Cos I'm a nice person I looked it up for you. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> There's lots of new fonts for people running in high res, but none I could find that made the font smaller.
But I found <a href='http://home.earthlink.net/~dragcity/consfont.htm' target='_blank'>this</a> cool site that shows you how to make your own new fonts. It turns out it's incredibly easy. Just one simple command. I'm going to have a go making my own fonts now. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--><span style='color:white'>[/edit]
Use edit, please.</span>
The other side is bad too. 1600x1200 on a 16" laptop screen requires squinting.
Shame there isn't a GeForce FX9800 Pro. It's the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, and the GeForce FX5900 Ultra. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Anyway, back on topic, i'm thinking about working on an extremely basic player model pack, i'm talking box models, that resemble the basic shape of whatever it is your staring at. However, will there be enough demand for it?
In fact, the 3600+ might not exist.
Scorpion: I believe hud_saytext 0 = effective blocking.
Honestly sir I was able to run at 800x600 with a p2-400 and a $30 Radeon 7000 (also known as a RadeonVE) so I'd really consider that a better alternative. Additionally, my current system, which runs NS at 1152x864 and 50-100 fps, cost about $500 including the monitor (a 19" flat-front samsung CRT). I'm not bragging about my system, I'm trying to indicate that one can build a very respectable box for very little money.
Being from England, any money i do come into goes straight into the pubs (or 'bars' as our american friends would say)
and i appreciate the font thing chessy. ill have ure babies if u got no other offers.
