What Is An Ip?

I dont usually hang in this forum but I was browsing thru and saw ppl 's ideas on how a gorge "builds" so I figured I'd ask here. I dont know if this has already been adressed.

1. is it like like in the 5 th Element? Does the ip contain the basic elements like H2O etc that are in a human and just weave them together? How do you explain consienceness? Are the marines actually some form of ai and they just dont know it? Or are the real marines jacking into these "bodies" through the internet or something like it.

2. Maybe they are holographic type beings. like Data from Star Trek TNG? Then again they would have to be within range of projectors. Or maybe there is a small floating on in the center of each marine projecting in all directions.

3. Each marine is a human and his dna is constantly being streamed to the ip. The ip creates a clone each time he dies sort of like in #1 only the conscienceness is created each time he dies picking up right from were it was disconnected. That is assuming our conscienceness is somehow connected to our dna?? Dont think so tho because I dont think dna changes. Its kind of like the base code for our body which our body works from. ?? so maybe ip could be streaming brain waves?? and the ip would just have a dna sample for each marine.

sorry rambling. Help i'm goin nutz this is BUGGN ME.

When I got the game I read the entire manual and it says that IPs are one-way phase gates to bring marine reinforcements in from the dropship (the dropship immediately undocks after inserting the initial marine squad to prevent alien contamination)

the reasone I ask is I'm planning a story for a comic and I need to know what the marine motivation would be. For example :
In the story if a marine is parasited can he just kill himself because he knows he will spawn back in? Its little situations like that that are bothering me. I have 2 ways I can go with this.
1 Story like a realistic game of NS. They build a base. Can die and respawn.

    2. Have the ip as a one way phase. Would be a pain because if a slaughter occurs you'd have to introduce a whole new squad.

Nevertheless, it's the way it works.

Each respawned Marine is a different person than the last. Aliens are totally different, though. This all has to do with the actual game, though. You could easily change the idea of respawn, but it wouldn't be exact to the manual. It's your call though.

You don´t have to be completely realistic about it... a lot of good fanfic stories are gameplay-based.... the players respawning, calling each other nubs, kicking the comm...... just for good humour

However if you want to make it story driven you´re either gonna have to change the BACKSTORY or YOUR story (i.e not making them die as often as you do in game)

I always thought that when a marine died, he got teleported back to the dropship and fixrd up in a automated medical facility, then sent back in through the IP, It explains how the marines know the layout well and why only squads max out at the 10-12 range

But if you write a serious fan-fic, and stray from the back-story, you are annoying those who actually read it in the context of the backstory (like me). Perhaps it's just me, but I can't help thinking "hell no" when someone starts feeling the recoil of their guns or hit each other in the back, not to mention firing RPGs at onos or battling armies of kharaa on huge, open fields.

when the aliens die their mind is absorbed back into the hive where it is implanted into a growing skulk. the body is different but the mind is the same

if you want to avoid confusion, dont let any of your marines respawn, or dont kill any of them in the first place.

I think I'm just not going to use an ip. Instead I'll either add something else like a small med lab where the characters can heal or make the armory give health. Thx for the feedback ppl

Assuming that they have a mind in the sense we understand it.

Marines: IP is a one way ticket out of the dropship and into the infested place (or location of IP)
however I've seen it done in some fan-fics where the IP actually takes the DNA of the person who died and respawns them, that makes it for infinit spawning of the same person

aliens: you die, your body dies, but your conciousness goes back to hive and put in next skulks

I got it!!! ok check it out!!.

I wanted to do a short test story to the comic so I figured I'd do a basic training for the characters I'm creating. They meet, and are briefed on Kharaa and the mission.
Ok here's how the ip works. For training marines are put in maps with real Kharaa (scientists have many for research purposes and because they are controllable aslong as they are seperated and out of range of more than one hive), the thing is the marines fighting are holographic projections/digital avatars?/ of the characters. They are training the same way that you and I play NS. !! Ip works the same with out affecting my story. Then in the regular story when someone is about to get killed they could spit out " Gee I wish there was such a thing as an ip in reality" or something like that. wow that just made my day.
ps dialoge will not include words like gee golly or gosh. I'm just exicited and wanted to get this thought down as fast as possible

I have read fronteirsman manual and will do the documentation and six days in sanji off the main page. Is there any essential reading I should also look into b4 I start Not self contained stories but stories that contribute to the history of the NS universe?

the manual and sanji are pretty much the only offical backstory we have as of now, however constelation does explain how it helps the TSA

when 2.0 is released, we will have the second part of six days in sanji
