yah, as was said. eveloution is simply mutation over a longer scale
if a mutation is good for the animal it is more likely to breed and thus more likely to pass on said mutation.
as for it, I find it cute (then again I think all chicks sorta are automaticly cute <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
on another note: Humans born with screwed up limbs and what not can also come about from certain chemicals. The famous one of these is falidamide (no idea how it is spelled). It was the 'wonder drug' for preagnant mothers. It helped out with alot of things (like morning sickness and others). however Before it was FDA approved it was released in Europe (who atleast at the time didn't have any where near the drug controll laws we did/do). very soon it was discovered that it caused horrible mutations in babies (extra limbs, missing limbs, flippers etc etc etc the list goes on)
so yah <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I love the FDA (it came out right around the time I was born (1983) so if not for the FDA I might have been a Flipper baby. One of my friends mom actualy did take it, luckily no side effects <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
Thalidamide i think. a friend of mine was born with one really long thumb on each hand and no fingers. and her palm is mostly gone but she can still pick stuff up by pressing between thumb and the rest of the palm.

A group of genes called Hox or "hot box" genes control body plan to a huge degree. A single mutation in these can make drastic changes to the overall organism. In beetles for example, one mutation can make a beetle with 20 legs, or make the legs sprout from the eyes and the like.
Body forms are a lot more malleable than you'd think with only small changes.
I also imagine those two extra legs would reduce the animals overall fitness. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> Hox gene mutations in humans are extremely strange, though usually deadly.
