Get a GameWave from some place like Lik-Sang.com, and plug in a PS2 control.

If you want exactly like the original PS1 (no analog), the absolute best controller ever is the Gravis Gamepad Pro. Its exactly like the PS1 pad. Size of the controller, the way the buttons feel, everything. Its pretty cheap, you can pick it up at Best Buy for around $20. I've had mine for about 6 years now, and it still works great. Its also available in classic Gameport fashion and there's also a newer model that's USB.
If you want something that's like the PS2 controller, I recommend the Axispad from Interact. They're kinda a no-name company (at least not as big of a name as Gravis or Logitech), but this is a good product. I picked up one for MGS2 on the PC, and it works just like a PS2 controller would. Best part is its only $10 and you can pick it up at almost any Wal-Mart. This one is only available in USB however, but that's no biggie as USB gamepads seem to be less headaches in general than the old gameport ones. There's a review of the pad here.
I'm really happy with both of these pads. You can't go wrong with either, and hell you might even want both if you've got the money.

Because Metal Gear Solid & Metal Gear Solid 2 are ports of console games, and are all but unplayable with a keyboard and/or mouse, but are just like their console brothers (but w/ better graphics) when controlled via gamepad.
Anyways, Keyboard doesn't have analog control, which the newer games like MGS2 absolutely need. You can't play MGS2 the way its meant to be played without analog.

Therefore could somebody explain why I have a feeling that you are still here?
-Set the WASD to the directional-pad equivelant
-set arrow keys to Triangle, Circle, square, and X buttons
-set ctrl, space, shift, and/or whatever keys are near your fingers for L1, L2, R1, and R2
Worked perfectly for me in my Tomb Raider days.

As for that TR thing, Im jus saying that I played it for PS1 first and directed the controls in that sort of way when I tried it on PC.

They have a bunch of port devices for Console Controllers.
