Whining About Teams...

I've been yelled at for the last time.
I want to talk about something that's been bothering me about a lot of the NS servers I've playing on and it's something that I've seen more and more of lately. I'll join a server, head on into the "random team" portal and start playing. Today, for example, I ended up on the alien team. The team is already pretty far ahead, they're up to 2 hives and one guy is a fade. The Marines are doing fairly well too, just starting to tech up with HMG and JP. Deciding that we want to contian the marine team, the fade works on luring them out of the base (can't remember what map it was, the space station one) and I would (playing as skulk) jump onto their heads and mmm...good marine dinner. This happens a few more times before the marine team gets sick of not being able to get out of their base and half the team just quits. So I'm happy, thinking the game's good as over. All of a sudden, one of the marines goes,

"Teams."

I just ignore it, thinking it's some guy who'd been playing too much TFC. I continue on my way, planning my next attack.

"Teams, Misfit."

Now, I'm interested.

I ask him what he means. He tells me that I should quit the game, head back into the server, and then proceed to join the marine team because I had joined last and because the marines should always have the extra man. (There were 3 aliens and 2 marines.)

Now, maybe it's just me, but I don't see why I should have to quit a team where I've worked hard with the team and we're doing well, simply because the other team quits. In case some people didn't notice, one of the features of NS is that you can't switch teams! So, if you start out with a full team and they all quit on you because you're losing, I'm sorry, but I consider that to be your problem and not mine. Any thoughts on this? Anybody think that you should switch over to the other team? Especially so late into the game? I'm just wondering what the community thinks of this issue.

I agree with you. Also, if someone says "teams" because they are losing, I dont see how anyone could have any interest in helping them delay their loss.

"Teams" is a perfectly fair request... however, 2v3 is hardly a "real" game of NS. Under 8 players or so, there's not really much to be complaining about.

Exactly, when its a lost cause, no one should have to switch, when its a fierce struggle, then yes :-\

the only time i see cause for a change of teams is at the start with some stacking going on. 8 on 5 isn't cool. I think there should be an admin command to make a player switch team in the case of stacking. I think you don't see teams even out alot of the time because you'd have to disconnect. It'd be nice if everyone just went random.

As far as this case in conserned you were in the right. The game was over imo and you should just stay Alien and win.

I only say teams when the teams are seriously out of hand beginning game. I enjoy having it 5v9 aliens when the marines are losing ground, more action.

On a slightly off-topic note, H20 has random team placement for all players everygame. Teams are never unbalanced for long unless the game is all ready over(how your game sounds like it was).

I will only rarely switch teams if players from the other team have gone to the ready room because they are losing. If our hard work means that their team is willing to give up, I'm not going to switch over and prolong the game.

I switch teams whenever they are uneven and someone says "teams", I do it simply because I don't care wether I am on the winning or loosing side. I have fun both being runned down and by running down others

But for those of you who find it hard to go from winning to losing I would say the line goes pretty deap into the game. If the game reaches that time and place where someone quits the server because he knows he is on the loosing team it is too late to ask for a team change. Anytime before that, changing team is ... well, the nice thing to do.

I say "teams" to make it fair and balanced. If my team has less players and is winning then saying "even the teams" is kind of pointless.

Is it just me or does the H20 rand team not work? Every time I go alien I end up in alien... why do I get the feeling that that:s just a ply to get you into a portal? Anyways 20 seconds or so and you get into rand team anyway.

The problem with teams is the midgame, when things are really pretty even. Then just one or two people on the same team drop, for whatever reason... and that's that. The real problem with this game is how a) delicate the balance is between two teams matching each other and one team totally dominating the other and b) how once one team gains the advantage, it's very unlikely to change back. Once you get far enough past the other team in the tech tree, that's that. So a lot of little annoying screwups: a bugged comm, a loss of one or two players, a key structure falling through the floor and out of the map- can totally destroy the chances of one side.

Screw switching over! There is a reason why you can't switch midway! That's why the game can be won by team imbalance if people end up quitting. And if that feature is disabled on a server then be polite and end the game since it shouldn't be so hard when its 2v8.

Switching over is done early in the game..

Well I don't really hold much with the idea of leaving the server and switching teams; I believe there's a perfectly good reason why Flayra didn't allowteam switching to be done in game: intelligence. Say I'm an alien, I leave the server after a "team" request and I join the marines. I have brought with me complete tactical and stratigic knowledge of the alien team's defenses and weaknesses/strengths. E.g. the aliens are concentrating a lot on the Computer Core hive but their eclipse hive is defensless. With this new info the marines happily go off and paste the Ecplise hive with no problems.

The reverse could also occur; I switch from marines to aliens and let the aliens know that most of the marine's res points are undefended and they're concentrating on getting a HA-HMG squad equipped. The aliens, knowing that a jp-hmg rush is not coming, can proceed to a far more aggressive stance, taking out the res points which I of course know the marines have taken and hopefully hitting the marine base before the lengthy technology research is completed.

I'm not saying that I WOULD tell the other team all that stuff, but I would be sorely pressed not to use it for my teams advantage. I think anyone would be in much the same situation. f you've chosen your team; stick with them, because changing just unbalances the game.

Ignore "teams" screamers when its obvious that they all surrendered.
Ignore "teams" screamers when the difference is less than 8vs10 .
    Dont ignore them early game.

Not to sound like a jerk but i ALWAYS ignore "teams" because it's such a pain for me...i have a REALLY crappy connection, so aside from the fact that it takes me like five freaking minutes(Yes thats overstating, but honestly it's two minutes at best) and I can only connect at ALL like 50% of the time as it is, It's just not worth it......the moment I hit that disconnect button i wont be coming back, and infact chances are I'm going to play something other than NS *Kicks his super crappy ISP*

Personally, if I join a server and it's 2v2 I join the marines, if the teams are bigger I generally join the one with either less players or the lower score. It's just my view of fairness
