The Nancy Project

ns_nancy is out of 2.0 and all further versions because the source is lost and it needs to be fixed because of the onos hull changes (now onos rets stuck in too many places).

The nancy project is all about rebuilding that oficial map as good as possible.
Maybe even giving Subspace a second marine entrance and naming Noname Hive.

With ripent you can export the entities and you can make topdown and gl_wireframe screenshots for dimensions and texutres.

This could be a combining effort and even if its not completed you could still use the build rooms for another map as memorial.

Edit after 3 pages:
Why not just set ns_nancy on custom map status.
keep a backup of ns_nancy and play it as custom, just without onos.
you dont really need onos on ns_nancy in 1.x

I'd be glad to do it if I wasn't already working on a map...

After going back to the map I was working on for a little bit, I really feel I could use a break from it. If we get a few people together, I'd work on this map. I'm thinking like 3 or 4 people get together, each person picks a hive, makes it, then that section gets pasted into a "master" map file and once all the main rooms are done the hallways get finished up. Once that is done someone can go and put the finishing touches on it. If this project starts to happen please contact me via irc on gamesnet.net #naturalselection, #1st.clan, #clan-cx, #nsmodelling, and a few other places, just pm me.

I think it may be wise to get the original authors permission to do this (we've had incidents of official map hackery before, havn't we Ollj )

If this was going to happen - it'd be a perfect time to give it a facelift. I think in all honesty it would be better to make a "Nancy II" than a straight remake - learn from the mistakes of the original (like the single-entrance subspace hive and the labyrinthine vents, for example) and give it a facelift in the lighting and texturing areas - those were always pretty weak areas in Nancy.
  • TeddyBearTeddyBear Join Date: 2003-06-07 Member: 17089Members
Actually, the single entrance to subspace and the labyrinth hive make it different from most other maps, one of the reason I like it.
Yes noobs get lost in the vents, but then noobs go gorge and rush the marine base with spit too so if they can learn the game they might as well learn the maps ... I vote to keep the original nancy if this were possible in any way. Btw since The quake1 source is released wouldn't it be possible to make an app to reverse the build process? The thing gives a map the need to compile is calculating shadows etc ... I'm no programmer (well I'm just starting to figure out pointers in c++ so I know programming, but very very little )so this might be complete gibbrish ... but I do think it would be possible to decompile the .bsp to get the .map from it (or whatever hammer uses, I use gtk or quark) ... just a thought

What Maus is trying to say is. Many things about Nancy sucked (sorry DD), in order to make Nancy a decent map one would have to remove all of the things that define Nancy. In ecsence you would have to create an entirely new original map.

    ...Hey, now there's an idea...

I suggest you explore this "make an original map" concept. I truely believe it has some potential.

Still tho, original maps are great, but come on now, what one person hates about a map, others love, if they want to remake the map, its their choice, if the servers want to add this remake to thier rotation, its also their choice, what have we been getting told for the last few months..... oh yes, wait untill its done before passing judgement

[semi-ot] Heh - I consider myself a bit of a veteran in the grand scheme of things, and I get lost in the vents between unnamed and the marine start all the time. [/ot]

    ---

And Mouse, my name-stealing friend, I guess I actually mean that it would be best to make a new map (kind of a tribute to Nancy, perhaps) that retains the defining features. Things like (and maybe not keeping all, but retaining the basic layout, at least):

    the cockpit-spawn for marines
    the mess hall area
    mother interface
    the big open cargo area
the red corridor route between port and unnamed

Thats a point , I was meaning how easy it is to starve marines of res, unless they use the WHOLE of marine start as base, and not just the cockpit.

if they use the whole marine start they have a double res right in their base

But yeah the vents (once navigated properly ) are easy enough to shoot from, balance it darnit!

I think this is a really neat idea, I've played and loved that map a lot of times, and I can't stop playing it. I would help (since I a m a mapper) but sadly I have too little free time, and when I have some, I dedicate it to my own NS maps.

    Good Luck

Bottom line is, regardless of your feelings on it, it's gone. If you're saddened by this, so be it, but you'll get over it. Maps have been removed from plenty of mods before, and will be again. That's how being part of an ever-evolving process works.

I won't go any further in-depth on my own (strong pre-1.0) opinion on the matter, but I am by no means alone. Hell, I specifically avoid going in-depth for the exact reason I'm quoting, but apparently I need to be even more vague...

I dont because some ns maps looks really professionell and SPECIAL, nancy has got severall "nono"s that hurts eyes. first thing is lightning, second the cruel choice of textures, third the layout.
make a remake if you want. but I think you better lern out of the mistakes, maybe take the style (if there is any) and create a whole new map. in the readme you can add "based on ns_nancy"...
    thats it.

I like the map and concepts, there is points for keeping the map or recreating it, and there is also points played against it to (Using Squirrles Words Now) Let It Die Already.

There is much uniqueness in Nancy which can inspire map authors, I took one inspiration from NAncy to include in my own map already. Personally for me Nancy had major flaws in the layout. For instance why was there an airlock just off the side of the Marine Spawn? Surely DD could have linked the current marine spawn to the airlock or something? Second of all, the marine spawn does not look like it was built for an Onos attack. I could contine on layout flaws for a while but this is unfair on DD. There is also no point as it is removed from NS2.

If anyone does wish to "Resurrect" then re-work the layout - otherwise just play Nancy as a custom map in LANs or on your own custom server.

While a remake would certainly be nice, it would also be a waste of time and highly innacurate. I will miss Nancy, but with four other maps to learn and play, 2.0 should be more fun than any 1.04 game on nancy you care to mention.

If it wouldn't be incredibly rude and outrageously stupid, I wouldn't mind remaking nancy. Basically, I would steal the floor plan and the spice up the visuals. Then I would have to make balance changes to the floor plan, and basically end up with a different map, but still end up plaguerising (sp?) DevilDogs map.
    Its a no go.

And KFS - sure - Nancy isn't on par with the visuals (and general mapping talent) of the other 6 official maps but you should really keep that kind of Let.It.Die attitude to your self.
