<div class="IPBDescription">Rage against the machi...microsoft</div> Ok, despite the title, this is not a "OMG MICROSOFT SUXX0RZ L3TS H4X THEM!!!!ONE" topic. This is a topic designed to see if any of you poor souls are having the same problems as me.

On Sunday, I bought Star-Trek Elite force 2 (yes most ST games suck **** but trust me, this one owns j00 all). I immediatly installed it and had 10 minutes of fun shooting up Borg until

"You will be assimi.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i."

It had crashed.

Okay, reboot. Another 10 minutes.

"Resistance is fu.u.u.u.u.u.u.u.u.u.u.u.u.u"

F***it.

Sometimes it will last a good 1/2 hour before crashing, sometimes 5 minutes if i'm lucky. I looked on various message boards and found several other peeps encountering the same problem. The answers were always the same;

"Your computer must be overheating" "It must be a bad stick of RAM", "Download the latest drivers for your graphics and sound cards", but the reply was always the same:

"But i've DONE all that!"

Then I discovered it wasn't just STEF2, someone posted on Computing.net saying they had the same problem with Pirates of the Carribean.

Then it clicked.... DX9.

So I searched for "DirectX 9 crashes" and look what I found! Some people on this message board are very opinionated:

I've got a Radeon 7000 and tried to download DirectX 9 for the Nascar 2003 game and car viewer. BIG,BAD, mistake. It downloaded fine, but then when you have to reboot the computer to finish installation it crashed the computer. The comp guy was on the phone with me for 1/2 hour figuring out what went wrong, then he was at my house for 2 hours reformatting, restoring and booting my computer back up. I was not a happy camper. The tech said the highest DirectX that the 7000 can take is 8.1. Lots like someones looking for ways to get people to spend more of their hard earned money. In order to play Nascar 2003 you need DirectX 9 and in order to get DirectX 9 you have to have a 9000 series Radeon card. I wonder if I can get Papy to buy me the card after I spend the $50 some odd bucks on their game...lol.

Wow.

If you want the complete page, I can post a link, but I would like an admin to say it is ok first since there is some swearing there.

So, things to discuss:

1. Are you having problems with DX9?
2. If so, what graphics card?
3. Do you blame Microsoft or ATI?
4. Which is better, ATI or NVIDEA? (joking, please don't start a flame war)
5. Do you think ATI will release a driver for those of us with < Radeon 9000? (I hope so)
6. Is it just ATI cards? One guy said he had a Geforce 3 and had the same problem.

Discuss. Debate. Don't flame.

I'm having exactly the same problems (locks of that descriptio).
But with 2 small differences, number one is that i'm not running DirectX 9.
And number is that it happens to me on different titles.

I've started to think that its my graphics card or my sound card.
I'm going to run a few games tommorow without my SoundBlaster
Live in, if it still crashes i'm going to hunt down a decent nVIDIA card,
    and learn to live without my beloved Radeon 9000 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

If the above fails. then i'm shelling out for a new motherboard, if
that fails i'm going to sell all the bits off and spend it on X-Box titles
or ale, i've not decided which yet. I might get both.

Installed dx9.0a at some point for some reason.
    Games suddenly started performing choppily.
    Including splinter cell for example.

    Have a radeon 9700 pro.
With all the peons under its reigns, why would microsoft release a new version which is counter-productive...fools.

I have that sort of a problem on XEN now in the HL singleplayer campaign. That bit after you fight & defeat Gonarch. It keeps freezing with the sound making a (n admittedly cool) loop but leaving me no option to switch off my computer at its main switch or the plug.

At first I thought the latest HL patch had done this, but reading your problems with DirectX 9...

I have the same problems... But had them with my old Matrox G400 AND now with the Geforce 4MX... And I found out that it's actually my sound card that's causing the lock-ups... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

What is interesting that, if I played games, it would sometimes lock up after 5 minutes, 10 minutes, sometimes after 10 seconds... But when it 'warmed' up, it could run for hours without locking-up... Argh...

No idea how I'll fix that, without putting in a new one or buying a new comp... And yes, don't tell me. I'm TOO lazy to go fiddling around with it just now. I don't play any games anymore, so the problem isn't as annoying as it would be in the first place.

On a related note, I just found the other day a Rage Against the Machine CD I didn't even know I have. If you want to know, it's their first cd (R.A.T.M.)

also related, when I installed DX9.0, my framerate dropped to an unspeakable low of 10-15 fps. In opengl. Well that was before the reformat <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

edit: I got a GeForce3 (no Ti) by Leadtek.

Now that sounds VERY familiar. I noticed STEF2 always crashes when a sound is playing, which suggests that it is sound-card related, but that doesn't mean it isn't DirectX's fault, it is probably DirectX which is incompatible with the sound card!

    Boo microsoft, BOO!

It was due to a bad stick of memory, and a bad PCI Sound Blaster card. I got a new stick, and a new Audigy, and it worked fine.

Be sure to check your system for dust buildups, a single fan encumbered by a bunch of dust could make your system overheat, leading to crashes. Trust me, I had a GF4 that had so much dust gathered (in only 6 months mind you) that the fan stopped moving, overheated, blew out the power supply, and gave me a week long headache.

I've never had any problems with DirectX drivers before, Vice City ran fine on my GF4, now it crashes during heavy action on my GeforceFX ...although thats clearly a problem with the drivers or the game <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I've had my Geforce for only some 4 months... Or more... But it isn't the overheating... DirectX 9 killed my inner child....

I kept getting classfactory cannot supply selected class errors whenever I tried to watch a few of my movies, turns out it was DirectX 9 not liking .avi files.

A quick burl through DivFix and I was all set, but still... I shouldn't have to put up with that crap.

I didn't notice if you mentioned which OS you are using, but I recently uninstalled DirectX 9 from my XP machine.

    Here's where I found it - <a href='http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/66683.html' target='_blank'>"How do I uninstall DirectX 9?"</a>

At the bottom of that page is a note to <a href='http://www.3dcenter.de/downloads/directx-dx9uninstaller.php' target='_blank'>this website.</a>
It's in German so if you can't read it (I couldn't) the download is right there for you to click on.

WARNING: It's terribly important that you follow the directions to the letter. Check the README file for directions.

Why would you want to uninstall DX9? To install DX8? As much as I think D3D looks terrible, and as much as I dislike working with it, you pretty much need DX to play anything on a windows platform.

Haven't you been paying attention? If someone installs DirectX 9 and then tries to play a game that has worked for years and it crashes, the problem is not likely to be dust, the problem is almost certainly DX9!

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> I had Geforce2 and DirectX9.0a, no problems. Well if you had been paying ATTENTION it is mostly the ATI cards that have this problem. The thing is, Microsoft is unlikely to do anything about it, as they can just say it's a problem with your card. And ATI have shown no sign of releasing new drivers for anything less than a 9000.

Oh well, looks like i'm going out to buy a new graphics card, and it sure as hell isn't going to be an ATI one. Anyone know a recent graphics card for under ?60 (about $80) that definatly works with DirectX?

Maybe it is the operating system? Is everyone who's having the problems using windows 98?

I'm running XP with DX 9. My graphics card is a radeon 9600pro with a big passive heat sink(one of those big zalman things with a heat pipe and 2 big aluminum sinks for each side of the card, of course this voids the warranty but I'm not very concerned since it is allready overclocked and I had no problems with it before or after the 'operation') and the sound is a built-in soundMAX solution from analog devices. I've had no problems with catalyst 3.5 drivers, luckily the lock up when accesing the console or pressing esc in HL has been resolved with the 3.4 drivers, and my card is pretty new so I have not had a chance to get annoyed at ATI's driver support yet <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->...(meaning I never used the 3.2 drivers...)
