Make sure that you have an FMOD.DLL file in your half-life directory. If not, maybe somebody here can zip and post up theirs (as I'm at work and can't until I get home).

mmmmkay I am sorta slow so could you tell me these things pls:

    1) How are you connecting to servers? (ingame browser, external server browser?)
    2) do you get a CTD (crash to desktop)?
    3) If it is a CTD, when does this happen?(like exactly, when you hit connect, when certain words show up, etc)
    4) Is this a new problem? (if not what have you changed as of late)
    5) is this for all HL mods or just ns?

oh and if you aint ussing an external server browser...
    try one (I suggest <a href='http://www.udpsoft.com/eye2/index.html' target='_blank'>ASE</a>)

FYI that is the replacement for the windows GPF box.. I don't see any reason why I need to report crashing of non-MS software to microsoft.. but I cant figure out how to disable..

You have the latest version of half-life.. correct?
You didn't play with any of the dll's in hl/ns folder..
I think I had this problem when I had a bunch of mods installed.. like 7 or 8, none of them would work

Try swapping out your fmod.dll with this attached one (unzip it, rename your existing one to fmod.bak, and put this one in the same spot). Also, clicking the 'click here' link in that dialog will tell us more about what's going on:
    fmod.zip 117.1K

( and devnull - if you want to cripple error reporting, the best way is via a local group policy. To do this

    1. start | run | 'gpedit.msc'
    2. Navigate as shown
    3. Set to disabled

And for gosh sakes be careful, gpedit is hella dangerous if you are a knucklehead)

Can't disable I have XP Home, and gpedit.msc isnt on it..
Found another way to kill it though

I also get this problem. It happens for me as soon as I double-click hl.exe in the Half-Life directory. I don't even get into the game before it crashes. I have tried completely reinstalling Half-Life and not even the original game (plus the 1.1.1.0 patch) work correctly. This is very odd, because around 2 months ago, on this same computer, I was playing 1.04 NS all the time. Since 2.0 was released, I've installed it, gotten the error, and have been trying to fix it since. I've been trying to think of what I've changed, but the only thing I can think of is stuff like the automatic Windows Updates (running XP Prof.)

I've tried several versions of the "fmod.dll" fix, to no avail.

Here's some more info about the error message, if it helps anyone.

    AppName: hl.exe AppVer: 1.1.1.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217 Offset: 00025a58

Is anyone else getting a similar problem?
Has anyone found the cause of this problem?

It's driving me up the wall, because I REALLY want to try out NS 2.0

    Thanks

The next time it occurs, click the 'click here' for more info hotlink on the window. Then open the 'more technical info' links and grab the outputted TXT and XML files. post them up here (zipped). I'll toss it into a debugger and see what I can see.

OK...did some digging and found what was causing the problem. I stuck the minidump into kd.exe and found that it was breaking on SetCooperativeLevel on the initialization of DirectX. I thought that was pretty odd, thinking just about everyone should be getting this error, or maybe it's a video card thing, etc., and then went to look at my DirectX settings in the Control Panel (again). I've got the DirectX SDK on this computer, and even though I had the debugging stuff set to use the Retail (non-Debug) version of DirectX with Debugging output set to the lowest, there's this little checkbox that defaults to "on", saying "Break on D3D Error". I unchecked the box, and the game loads flawlessly. Hope this helps anyone having similar issues.

Well done! Although I rather doubt we'll be seeing a lot of repeat posts due to your circumstances <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
