Here's some more information for you ravenous folks, just posted:

http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=15798

The interview is mostly for people that haven't kept up to date with the changelogs, but you'll probably find something new there.

Ooooh Very nice for us folks who don't want to wade through the changelog of DOOM. It's pretty big, interview is good because it still leaves things that I don't know of. I like being surprised.

Charlie Cleveland - Definitely. Even if not everything gets finished, we've been sitting on this version too long to hold it up any longer. This is evil. Please don't let the rabid 1.04-hating monkies prevent you from taking the time to make everything perfect. I'd gladly wait a week or two more if it meant the balance would be that much better, or if you just fix a couple of annoying bugs.

    Hear Hear!

1.04 isn't such a horrible game that we wouldn't put up with it any longer for a better 2.0. Take your time, test all the bugs, balance gameplay, and when everything is settled, release the mod. We'll do the rest.

    Don't be provoked by us.

I'd say in about a year and a bit I'll be able to fund your 10k+... unfortunetly the business I'm starting is still in it's 'coming together' stage, but when things take off, as they already are, I couldn't think of a more worthy cause to lend financial support too.

Though it's worrisome that the beta is being cut so close to the line by this release date, I have faith in Flayra and the testers to pull it off. From the tester comments it sounds like the game is pretty close to ready as-is, and it's obvious that the team members are working their butts(stupid filter) off to get it done in time. I can certainly respect Flayra's commitment to his release date, though I think the community would get over a small delay.

I'm definitely signing up for Constellation once 2.0 comes out, and I think anyone who plays the game regularly and can afford it should do the same; I've spent way too many hours on this game to keep freeloading

HomeLAN - Have there been any thoughts for future versions of Natural Selection at this point?

Charlie Cleveland - We have big plans for NS, including marine vs. marine and alien vs. alien play, new technology for the marine tech tree, female marines and maybe even new alien lifeforms.

That said, while we have plenty of ideas, time and money are still hard to come by. Many members on the team have been working too hard for too long, and we need a break. It just can't continue at this rate without some changes. We'll be taking a break after 2.0, and I'll be trying to secure some funding for further NS development and possibly for getting NS into retail.

Possibly getting NS into retail? You mean retail as in what Valve did with Counter-strike and DOD being buyable in the stores, even though they can be downloaded otherwise?
  • ZekZek Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 7962Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
Yes... Flayra's mentioned being interested in that a number of times.

What's wrong with it? It gives the mod a LOT of publicity and new players, and puts money(I assume..) in the pockets of the developers for future support and additions. Just look at how many players CS and DoD have. It seems that the idea is morally offensive to a lot of players but that's just selfish; nobody's forcing people to spend money on it, and even if the first they hear of it is from retail they can still get Half-Life and download the mod.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with it, it's a good idea! I was wanted to confirm that it wasn't something where NS is no longer downloadable, and it can only be bought.

Yeah, it'd be a shame for Flayra to get anything out of a few years of hard work, eh?
Anyhow, its been said a thousand times, NS on HL1 will always be free.

Flayra has not spent a few(as in 3) years working on this mod, right? Maybe more like 2?

Everyone have faith in Flayra's words. If he announces a release date, it gets fulfilled if he has to spill blood to do it. I know this for sure. I still have the scar from when he had to spill blood, too.

Personally, I don't just favor the idea of NS going retail, I demand it. Maybe it won't happen with 2.0 simply because we're on the end of the HL1 wave, but if there is a NS2, it more than deserves to be a retail/free download combo like CS and DoD.

It will bring in so many new people, force game review sites to check it out and review it more reliably, and so on. I think even 1.04, perhaps with a few minor bugfixes, would have been a worthy retail release, because I've had so much fun with it so far. Truly one of the best concieved and executed mods ever, and really demanding of a wide release.

I never realized the sacrifice Flayra(and MonsE? and others?) made for NS, and I thank them for that. Why did it take so much work though? I thought other Half-life mods never took that such a massive amount of work. I guess NS must have alot of tough things to program.

Your assumption is correct. Flayra had to do a lot of clever stuff to implement NS with the HL engine.
