Just four words off a 1 liner oh well.
Anyway i play games mainly to escape the reality of life i feel it is an outlet for my emotions, anger, and other things id rather be playing a game then off working making money well.. i only work to get more money to get more games lol.
Games also serve as entertainment when life gets u down and u just cant bare to face it nomatter what, also the fact that u can pretend your someone else living out your dreams/fantasy. But thats just me

I play games to have fun, not to win or become all elite and all, just to have some fun, it's shocking how many people these days get really **** over small games. oh well

I used to play games out of fun and... Addiction.
Now I find role-playing (yes, simple messenger posting or forum posting) much much more attractive.

I play games to feel like I've got a definite purpose. You know how in real life you're often going around wondering "Well, what next? What am I supposed to do? It's not like I matter much." I love well-made RPGs because everything you do has a consequence that's more visible in the short-term than your actions in real life usually are. I love playing as a lerk, or a gorge, or a marine who does welding/building in NS because for that 10 to 40 minutes of a round, I get this feeling of "You know, if I hadn't been there to do this at that time, my team would've been ruined. I did something small and it may well have been what brought my team to victory." NS is just beautiful in how everyone who does their part can think that, and they can all be right.

I remember when I was a small kid, I used to play a soccer game (cant remember name) on the nintendo with my best friend and I literally NEVER won. And then some time later I got the PS2 and Midnight Club, that game was so EFFIN hard! I used to play about 10 hours a day only to wake up the next morning and TRY to beat the opponen wich I have been desperately trying to beat for the last 3 days, by running the same 5 minute circuit for the whole 10 hours. Just imagine the frustration I was in. Felt like hanging myself. (Might be purely the fault of playing 10 h a day, or the loosing, I just dont know)
And I play games to forget the troubles (and boredom) of real life, and to experience new things you could not while trying to do it in the real world.
(Quite ironically I am downaloading Midnight Club 2 during this post )

Im not so sure it is common myth that everyone wants to be part of something but me nope, in the end i have no expections of life as in the end i know i will die and whatever i have done in life will be forgotten in the mist that is time.
To sum up

Whatever we do in life makes no diffrence to the universe life will go on as it always has and always will...well unless u make a really really really big black hole that sucks up all the universe but i dout it somehow.

Games are fun to play duh, and as others have said they are a greatway to vent off steam lol.
Its competitve whether or not you are in a clan or tournament. There is always someone better then you too so always a challenge.
You neet many new friends from all over the world, something you might not have been able to do otherwise.
And if you really get into a game (ie Freelancer mp, mafia, etc) its like watching a cool movie or reading a good book where you are the star in it. If you mod, skin, modelm map, do fan fiction, etc you can let your creativity flow and be even more into the game.

And now lets stop that and get this thread back to topick. Mmkay?
everyone says ' oh i play for fun i dont care about my score' and the classic 'its a team game..'
but deep down everyone loves to have that #1 spot on aliens
but the fun is a huge factor if i didnt enjoy it i would walk...

Plus its just great fun.
