I thought this would interest you: env_particles, used in large amounts can frag your RAM. You will see random light values on the level that change when you walk through it or open the console.
Maybe it is not exactly the amount of particles, I haven't examined it enough but I will do this now <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Don't blame Cagey if your light maps flicker around <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

EDIT: hmm... now I got the same with a usual overscaled sprite <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

The particles can cause some weird effects. I built a test map once that would crash my PC and cause it to lock up completely as soon as it loaded..not good.I think it was something to do with particles inside the skybox..
