Presenting my unnessisarily complex cannon thingie. Too many polys for game, but I thought I'd show it anyway. About 20% of it is a hackjob from other guns (red dot sight and coolant rails aren't mine, and the fans/trigger group is obviously from the chibi kill stick)

Fear not, if you run out of ammo you can bash a skulks head in with it's massive weight!

I know my smoothing groups are bad, but celica hasn't released his tutorial yet <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I was originally trying to model burning kromes toxic warrior gun but I didn't like how it turned out. Instead of trashing it, I got bored and a little ridiculous. No, not high <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ithink you can use any model in HL2, its jsut a mader of pollys which this seems to have about as meny pollys as anyother HL2 model <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ahh, but Q4 was recently looking for people who could model 400,000 - 1,000,000 polys, and if it ever goes to 1 mil, I don't think you would want that with a lower end comp in comparison to it actually being playable -_-

I would like to try optimizing this model's polycount for an HMG replacement.

    Please?

good looking gun, except yah there are smoothing groups problems and insane detail in some parts while not enough in other parts.

Doom 3 and Quake 4 models are made with up to millions of triangles but they have to be reduced (manually or automatically) to a model that has only about a couple thousand triangles just like todays current games. they look detailed though because normals maps are used to provide the detail that was lost in the high-poly to low-poly conversion. the normal map generation is automatic and the high-poly to low-poly conversion is sometimes automatic too. the conversion is not done by the game itself though.

i'm not sure but i think modelling for these future games is easier and more fun because there are almost no limitations on what can be created.

Yeah, adding the chibi killstick was spur of the moment. The stock however (with ugly cooling tubes + vanes) doesn't appeal to me very much, but I wasn't being serious when I made that part. I just wanted to fill space <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Without it, it looks even more plain.

  • PFCNublarPFCNublar Join Date: 2003-04-23 Member: 15792Members
Hack off the scope. I'd bet you'd kill of around...500-1000 polies just doing that. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->, then add iron sights, like on a normal gun in CQB.
  • MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
There's also a lot there that could be skinned on - the wee slits, &c, and the top fan (maybe both fans, but you'll never see enough of the top one for it to be worth the polys), for example. Culling all the backfaces too might bring it down to an acceptable PC (or as acceptable as you're going to get with this thing).
  • UnknownUnknown Join Date: 1970-01-01 Member:
thing is, though, unless you're using reflex aim (not professionally recommended in actual combat, duh)

the scope might as well be a non-magnifying, illuminated-reticle scope. it's much more effective for CQB than iron sights.

Got it down to a more acceptable 1600 polys by hacking off the scope, deleting backfaces, remodelling a few areas. Don't fancy skinmeshing it though, and the smoothing groups still need to be worked out (and some areas will neet a bit of edge turning to get smoothing looking right).
