While i am well aware that new maps have been added and old maps improved upon, could someone enlighten me to the fate of ns_bast? Pardon me if i'm wrong, but I don't seem to hear much about it, nor have I detected any mention of it from my limited knowledge of the changelogs.

I don't think it has changed at all.

Bast ended up in an odd position: a lot of under-the-hood changes were made which make it much more optimized and lowers server CPU usage considerably. It also has some small gameplay changes to stop exploiting behavior and spawn rushes to some degree. But unfortunately after that, the source to to the map was lost in a drive crash. To worsen the issue, the maper himself got fed up with a lot of criticisms of the map by players and veterans, and left the mod entirely, and we've been unable to contact him since.

So... that's where it stands. The map plays great and is far better off than 1.0, but it will seem visually very similar, unlike most other 1.0 maps that were reworked quite a bit. Which is probably ok, as many players never got much chance to play bast in the old version due to high resource utilization on servers....

aw, I'm very sorry to hear that he left. Honestly, I think it's my second favorite map (after ns_nothing). As long as that bug I've been spouting about gets resolved one way or another, I'm MORE than happy to see minimal changes. I know it had a high resource usage, but it really was a great map. Tunnels, tunnels, and more tunnels, and ones that were easy to memorize (unlike ns_nancy ), great texture usage, and great gameplay in my opinion. It made for some of the fastest paced games I've ever played.

/me mourns for the freezing up of the 1st map that i played on NS...the map that kept me addicted...I'll always miss you, Refinery hive! Base seige! Kitchen seige... (It's an insider tactic )

On a side note...RIP ns_nancy. You will not be forgotten, nameless hive...

It would be really sad if this map went the way of the nancy as well. Everyone only critisized it in my opinion because of resource hungriness, and the fact that everytime the server restarted or crashed it was always bast which sort of made people sick of it quickly.
In 1.04 it tended to crash quite a bit too only because if rines stuffed up a jp rush they would mine the base till it crashed.

Hera and Bast were always my favourites - they were the true essence of NS maps in ambience and before everyone learnt the steadfast strategies on the 2 maps they were so much fun.

The games of sensory first on Hera hiding above the reception elevator with full cloak (1.0, 1.01 etc) - now that was golden

Bast honestly didn't need much work (for pub play). Marine spawn was just to vulnerable, as long as that is addressed bast should become as popular as it was in the early days of NS (it was very popular ).

First of all i must say that PLEASE don't misinterpret my comment, because there is not even a bit of sarcasm on it, but people don't know how to make SECURITY BACKUPS or what? Sincerely, if I had enough brain (and pacience ) to make a NS map (don't necessary need to be official, but if it's official, i would care about it much more..), i would make a backup of it EVERY DAY (on a CD-RW), and a security backup of an important version every week or so (on a CD-R)

I'm not critisizing the map makers, but with 3 awesome maps lost by drives crash (nancy, bast and another i can't remember now...), i think that there must be much more attention to the security and backup of them....I hope that my advice don't fall in a broken coat...

Yes, we no longer allow mappers (or any developers working on anything) to submit finished work without including source. It then gets backed up in offsite storage.

I as well am curious as to why Nancy is out. It seems quite popular on 1.04 servers. What's the deal, M. Evil?

ns_nancy was the very first map I played, why is it getting removed permanently? Or will it return?

Uhm... I think it's been said a million times that nancy's source is lost, so it cannot be tweaked for 2.0 gameplay...

Im pretty sure the main reason nancy is out is because of numerous onos stuck issues. Without the map source they cant fix the problems so they just decided to remove it.

Bast is the best map ever.

I hope it wont be cut out from the next version (not 2.0) since the source is lost, if there will be another version..

that's sad that maps get dropped. all of them were great work. somebody will have to revive it someday. i get really emotionally attached to maps like they were homes where i had good memories. i have to know i can revisit them whenever i want or i may go crazy.

On Nancy: unless it could be recompiled (which it can't - source is long gone in a hard drive failure), everytime you evolved into an Onos you would spawn stuck in the floor. Everytime you moved you would stick in low ceilings. Basically, it makes 20% of the alien team unusable, and to paraphrase Homer Simpson, was cut.

Don't worry, it's creator 'Devildog' is working on his next NS masterpiece even as we speak.

Couldnt Devildog use winbsp, fix the miss aligned textures and corrupt brushes, and then recompile it?
IT would take some work, but it *would* be possible, if he REALLY wanted to do it.
