Unstable Pings

I've never had a problem with pings before with any other games, but with NS 2.0 my pings seems to be 100-200 more the they usually are and frequently, about every 30-60 seconds, my ping will explode to well over 1000. This has made the game unplayable for me. My pings are usually decent with my cable connection (200 or lower), so I really don't know what the problem is. I'll post my system stats below:

AMD Athlon 2600 XP
512 MB PC2700 DDR RAM
RADEON 9100 128MB DDR
Windows XP Pro

It's mostly a server issue. You'll probably find that, occasionally, everyone's pings go nuts. It happened all the time with version 1, it happened less in 1.04, and it occasionally still happens with 2.0.
