Server Rules

Are they so hard to follow?
I don't understand and perhaps never will.

I run a server that trys to promote teamwork, good sportsmanship, and good mojo.
In order to do this I felt it be important to list a few rules in the connection message. Pretty simple

No exploiting
No swearing
No cheating
work together
be nice to noobs

I really dont think thats too much to ask. However, I have been finding people that insist on bickering me to death over the no swearing issue inparticular. We dont jump down your throat about it until you have really been obnoxious with it. Then you will usually end up banned.

I find this in soo many people that play NS.

Any of you other server ops that have similar rules run into it as much as I do? Or is it just these punk west coast kids that think they are the schnizt and do what they want?

People can swear without having any impact on teamwork, sportsmanship, or "good mojo", and they can also effect these things without swearing. So maybe they are just making fun of your silly ban on arbitrary words that are "no-no" for no good reason?

What do you mean silly ban on no-no words? Try swearing in the Natural-Selection IRC channel and see what that gets ya.

He has a perfectly good reason: he doesn't approve of swearing. It's not unreasonable of him to request that the language be kept clean. His server, his rules, so if you want to play in his house, you should respect those rules. If you have a problem with "clean" speech, go elsewhere.

Three simple rules on an [NAR] server

1 - No swearing, racial comments

    2 - No noob comments

    3 - Have fun!

The admins are told that there are should they see it or hear it - ban it - no warnings given.

There are other servers out there that appreaciate swearing, and we'd rather have people who like to swear play on those servers. It's not that we're against swearing, we just don't think it belongs on our servers.

The rules are right there in the motd and if you don't like the rules log off. Two days since the start of 2.0 and you should see the ban list!

The natural selection community mirrors the attitudes of people in real life - people simply dont read the rules. Its unfortunate but true (the fact that people have read yours and are actively commenting on them is very encouraging). Usually the only way to enforce them is through a lot of admins and a lot of hard work.

As for the swearing - excuse the phrase but "**** happens" people get excited and forget and I'm as guilty as anyone of that in the heat of the moment (and I'm the server op ...) instead of outright banning swearing I simply advise that people keep it to a minimum and have found that its a fairer way of wording. Each to their own on this issue but I only step in when it gets abusive or becomes continuous.

I think asking people not to swear is a very reasonable request. Of course they can forget for a moment in the heat of the battle, but then a warning (usually followed by a "sorry") takes care of the problem. People who keep on swearing are banned on our server without any hesistation. In my opinion these players are never a good addition for the team anyway. And the definitely have an impact on the "atmosphere" or "good mojo". I, and lots of other people, play for fun, not to hear people swear at eachother. I would immediately leave any server where people continiously swear (although I don't have much trouble with it in RL ).

Sadly, there's still a lot of players who don't understand this, your work as an admin is never over. Luckily there are also lots of players who are really nice, and as a result of a couple of enforced simple rules, the server will be better.

(In my very personal opinion: people who whine or bicker constantly about rules or such are also banned...)
