Spread Out Marines Spread Out!

Here's another little trick I've discovered while playing marines. Certain positions in the game are extremely hard to secure, for example, reactor room in tanith. In 3 games, marines were not able to secure the area once. However, I have a proposal next time you run into one of those situations.

Tell your marines to spreadout! It makes absolute sense. Aliens depend on melee weapons, forcing them to get up close to a marine to take him out. Meanwhile, while the aliens are taking out one single marine, every other marine in the room is firing on them, making short work of what would have been a deadly alien force. This can be pretty hard to carry out in pub games, but if you've got a good team, teach them how to spread out (i.e. into corners).

FYI In situations like reactor room, spreading out does not mean go 3 meters away from each other, it means one person at every distant corner of the room.

Excuse me if this is common knowledge, but I couldn't help but share .

It's common knowledge that no one seems to follow. Aliens are now even more dependent on melee weapons until they get a third hive. While lerks have a slightly annoying ranged weapon (spores), fades no longer have the acid rocket until hive 3. The gorge's bile bomb can not reach long distances, and the skulk and onos have absolutely no ranged weapons.

The problem I normally see with spreading out is that there's not enough people to cover the room. I'll bind 5 people to squad one, and only 4 will actually follow the order. One of them is usually knocked off on the way to the destination, and that leaves 3. Ah well, it definitely should be done when you have the man power.

First, spores are negated by spreading out. Thus, it's a good idea until third hive, EXCEPT against onos, where you need concentrated shotgun fire (use jetpacks for that).

I try, whenever possible (and I have enough micro time) to position marines in crossfire positions and tell them to STAY THE FREAKIN' ____ there. Skulks come in, turn to chew one, are being shot by four others who are halfway across the room. Sometimes I bait guys with low health too, slap 'em in the middle and tell them in no uncertain terms they are the enfants perdus, the skulkbait.

Works, just time consuming and VERY difficult with impatient marines. You just have to use medpacks as rewards...

He he...sometimes I have to leave bread crumb trails of ammo and medpacks to get marines where i want them.....it gives the added bonus of making them feel really stupid too.

Nasty, this is the most obvious squad tactic for NS that nobody seems to know or do.

Another benefit to spreading out is so you won't end up wasting 20 rounds into h00b-n00b marines while they hop in your way.

The day marines start to realize this and adhere to it as a tactic, that is the day NS has achieved a new level of teamplay. Right now people still think mass jumping and strafing is the answer (which is a v1.04 reaction I think). Mad jump dodging in some situation might still be relevent in v2.0 but never in squads situations.

Another obvious squad tactic that nobody seems to know or do is doing security while your teammate builds. How many times have you started to build soemthing in a real dangerous area and once you start your teammates shove their face in and start building too? If it is a PG then it's okay but anything else they should be watching your back.

Fact: In testing, I have learned that the gorge's bile bomb does JACK against marines.

    That means 0 damage.

You heard me right, bilebomb is strictly a building killer.

If you think I'm wrong, try getting hit point blank by a gorge's bilebomb. Worked for me, and I'm pretty sure it was default settings, cuz the server I played on has no server mods.

    Edit: Flew way off topic....so...

Yes, spreading out to secure a room is highly effective, especially when every other marine is within line of sight of all the others, therefore, making it impossible to sneak up on the squad. That means no hiding behind pipes, you silly people.

when i played NS 2.0 gorge, i killed several humans with bile bombs on one server, none on the next.

so i think it depends on some server or server mod settings.

You sir, are bsing out of your pants.

I find it isn't too hard to spread people out in pub. Just tell em, guys spread into corners. Of course, there's always the one or two paranoid idiots who wont spread out, but you can mostly ignore them.
