leads to crash
Ok im playing NS (and any other HL mod (only other mod installed is cs though)) and seemingly randomly it will hang up and the hard drive light on my computer is almost continuously on, I dont know what is being accessed, and it doesn't seem to have any cause, I have to ctrl-alt-del and shut half life down, and then re join the server, it also leaves my gamma settings high, but I think thats a hl problem.

Ok im running NS with these options

A3D
Open GL
1024*768

Hardware & Software -

1.666 GHz Athlon XP 2000 (FSB 133Hz)
768 DDR running at 133Hz (motherboard doesnt support 266Hz)
Geforce 4 Ti4200 XFX
On board Sound with Nvidia Soundstorm, and a NForce motherboard (Asus A7N8X Delux)
115 Gig OEM HDD (im running hl and Windows XP on D:\, C:\ has win ME on it,)
Windows XP

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying that *any* HL mod crashes with this issue?

Windows XP tried to submit error reports when a program crashes, so the solid HD indicator is more likely XP doing a crash dump, not the actual cause of the problem.

When this error occurs, is it usually when you first join a server or does it happen even if you've been playing for a while?

Also, does your sound loop when it crashes?

Oh yeah, are you running SP 1 on XP? I reccomend a visit to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Also make sure you're running the latest drivers for all you devices.

Before spending too much time on this (since it seems to affect all HL mods), uninstall and reinstall Halflife (or cs retail), and then patch to current, and reinstall your mods.

Right, if this affects all mods, I agree.

I also reccomend the updates though.

I only recently re-installed half life after a virus, and this problem occured before hand.

I havn't got a fast connection and don't want to spend the time downloading windows update though i will check on the drivers.

yes the sound does loop when it crashes, and it occurs randomly while im playing. (dont know about when im not playing )

And it can happen at any time after i join.

Do you mean this occured *after* your fresh install or do you mean that it was doing this before and continues to do so now?

We're still wondering if you see the same problem in CS, do you?

Do any other games on your system have similar problems (fairly resource intensive gaves)?

I do have the same problem in CS, and no this problem has occured for a while now, it did not start after I installed my fresh copy of half life, it happened before I got infected with a virus.

Does this problem occur in NON-Hlaf-Life based games?

If not, uninstall HL and all mods then reinstall with all patches.

This is probably unrelated but AFAIK Nvidia soundstorm doesn't support A3d, just EAX.

ok then, but when I use EAX everything, i mean everything echos quite a lot, any idea how to solve that?
