Isn't there an FAQ for this, or something? The devs are looking into the possibility, it has been brought up ad infinitum before this. It probably will be, but not any time soon.
Well, map makers can put in destructable things, but they have to put it in. in de_vegas for counter-strike, you could shoot off pieces of a few pillars.
Hmm, this sounds like a very good suggestion. I might put something like this in my map. Make some tight entranceways destroyable around the outside (func_breakable) to make the doorway big enough to fit an onos through.

The HL BSP format really isn't suitable for this sort of thing. BSP trees in general aren't suitable to do this unless the changes are very small. they're efficient for rendering, but changing is hard. So any destructible part must be explicitly put in the map. Also, this has some potential to cause problems for visibility determination, and may cause the engine to draw much more than is needed. Haven't tried this, but I guess doing a whole map like this would give some impressive seconds per frame numbers. Right, to implement this without using thousends of entities in a BSP-Tree you would have to make it dynamic which is a) not possible in HL as you don't have access to the engine code b) still not possible in HL2 - see a) c) a hell of an afford to do in your own engine. Btw: We're talking about spaceships... what happens if it breaches the hull?

As people have said, dynamic environments with BSP trees = BAD. Halflife's facsimile of dynamic environments are gratings in like, say, TFC, and other similarly blowable things (dod_caen, anyone?). They're also very very small, and work similarly to weld points. You could place some in, which would probably be great for effect (restrict opening it to onos gore?). However, it wouldn't have much gameplay effect, unless you wanted to force a gorge to escort the onos or something, and restrict widening passageways to bilebomb.
That said, if you put more than a few in... Oh boy, talk about some serious system use problems.

There are some problems with destructible environments... for instance, in Tanith, if you walk right up to the weldable wall into Satcom hive and use acid rocket/bile bomb, it destroys the wall. You can't walk through it, however... you still have to weld it. Don't know if this was fixed or not, I doubt it.

they have destructible wall in ns_tanith after you weld the satelite thing near satcom and a NS map (in beta?) ns_mole? which you need to bust through rocks to get to a hive (at least one way).

The answer to the ever-repeating HL2 question, as of the last interview, was that there probably wouldn't be an HL2 NS mod and certainly not a conversion of any sort. Flayra said that instead he was interested in releasing a separate NS game with the Source engine, if he got a full team, a publisher and financing.

Hell, tfc has one. I think its flagrun, where you can crawl under a bridge, and set a demo, rum like hell and seconds later youve got a second passageway right underneath the brdige. (the bridge still stands however)
