Eric grew up in the mountains on Earth, one of the few places yet completely colonized by "civilized" technology and media. The farm boy was home taught by his mother, who had a college of books she kept on the mantle of the fireplace. His father was a large working man, who woke up at sunrise and turned in at dusk. The life of a skilled tanner was tough, as there were fewer and fewer animals left to skin, but pelts were good money when sold on the nets, and they got by.
Eric's first love was with a blond girl who lived on the other side of the mountain. He saw her running through the trees like the wind, and instantly fell in love. He was lucky in that she loved him back. They spent endless summers together in the woods, enraptured by their love for each other, oblivious to the world outside them.
Eric planned on marrying her, and bought an engagement ring, which he later showed his mother, but was nervous about asking.
The day after he was drafted by the TSA, taken because wealthy executives in high companies bribed government officials so as not to take their sons. He was sent through basic training and only allowed to write home in short emails which were monitored and rewritten.
He survived, and even prospered in the marines, eventually getting a post near a quiet mineshaft. He didnt much like the refiltered air or the claustrophobia the tight areas induced on his mountain bred body, but he survived and made do, always thinking of blond hair and home. He wrote often to his love, telling her he was planning on coming home soon, and was going to build his own cabin in the mountains.
With 4 days left in his service, Eric responded to an alert in the mines, and bravely hopped through the infantry portal.
Waiting on the other side were 2 Fades and an Onos, who had already smashed the marine base, but had left the portal for last...
His last thoughts were of mountains, clean air, and endlessly flowing blond hair...
