<div class="IPBDescription">On the intial Kharra Infestation</div> --------------------------------------------------
SECURITY CLEARANCE: DOUBLE BLACK
--------------------------------------------------
DATA COMPILED BY: Dr. Yu Kentago, D.X.S (Doctor of Xenoform Studies)
INTRODUCTION
As of yet. we have found no concrete evidence of how the Kharra infestation begins. When a Frontiersmen force first boards a vessel, there is no evidence of physical struggle. No bodies, blood, alien advancement, etc. It would appear that the aliens intial infestation does not occur on the personal level, but rather the cellular.
EVIDENCE
Studying ship logs from succesful purges, it appears that each ship records an outbreak of the flu in the days before the ship stops transmitting. On most ships, the log mentions nothing more than the sickness amongest all of the crew. On a recent purge, however, the ship's logo included updates up to the day contact was lost. The log appears to have been filed by the ships doctor. The log mentions that the sickness, though intially appearing to be the flu, quickly spread throughout the entire ship. Though only proving to be a minor annoyance during the early stage of the infection, it victims will suddenly collapse. The victim feels extremely weak for upwards of an hour. After a certain point, they lose conciousness and deaht occurs within about 5 minutes of it. The doctor examined one of the victims and found a complete breakdown of interntal organs, and an unnatural level of endorphines in the victim's system. The log ended with the doctor himself recording flu-like systems. It should be noted that the doctor had an active nanite system in his body to protect him from his profession.
While not clear cut, this is the best knowledge we have of how the Kharra begin the attack. It appears that the Bacterium begin by parasiting themselves on a person, followed by a complete absorbtion of the host's cells. I suspect that it is this intial influx of 'resources' allow the Kharra to intiate its self defense mechanism after detecting a hostile prescence. This raises the question: How does the Bacterium detect a 'hostile' prescence? Though I intially suspected the prescense of Nanites in a host's body, the doctor's limited survival kills that theory. Had the Bacterium considered the mere prescense of Nanites hostile, skulks would have been dispatched. The only reasonable explanation that the Bacterium is self aware and is able to reason what is a threat, and what is not. This theory is baffaling; it would make the first time a collective conciousness was ruling over an entire race of seperate organisms. As of now, I do not have any evidence to support this theory, though any other explanation escapes me.
CONCLUSION
The Kharra begin by infecting a ship. They then harvest the energy and molecules from the dead, and use it to fund their self defense mechanism. It could be possible to create an offensive system of nanites in high-risk environments to combat the intial spread of the bacterium. However, such a widespread use fo Nanites is highly dangerous, and does not offer a real long term solution. The Kharra have proven incredible at adaption; it would only be a matter of time till our system was bypassed.
Are we dealing with an intelligent entity, or an mindless, animalistic expanding force? I suggest that all TSA scientifc resource be shifted to determine this. Understand the threat is the first step to defeating it.

Comments
Assumed that bacteria cover every surface on an infested location, threats should be easy to detect. All lifeforms have chemical signatures (sweat being the most obvious). If bacteria is in contact with these chemicals, it can alert the bacteria around it so it spread outwards. It wouldn't have a clue how to respond to this threat however, so I've come to the same conclusion as you: the Bacterium is a sentient being. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
NS 3.0: New marine weapons: Pennicillian
As for the bodies not being found , they were just turned into ressources regardless of the way the victims died.

It's good, just death is misspelled.
