The new marine models

/me points to rr.org
The new Marine Models are excellent. Good job Squeal Like a Pig. The things I wanted to point out are:

<s>The turtle neck type uniform part might take some getting used to considering it's a bit strang looking. But that's just me.</s>

The utility shoes look like futuristic casts. =D

The pants don't look like jeans anymore. =(

The laser light is a nice touch, but there should at least be something in game for the Marines that gives you a laser light like that.

I miss the arrow things under the eyes, it made them look like they were from a tribe(which was a good thing).

What do you think? And for natural-selection.org's sake, update the Screenshots section.

I like it. The only thing I could find to complain about was MonsE's comments. :-D

Those ammo canisters at his belt look very nice too.

Even though the model and skin is very well done, the overall design of it I dont like, I think its the helmet. As good as this model is, I honestly think its going to be the first model replaced, at least reskinned, by others.

That model looks great, the laser sight is a neat little eye catcher and I really like the blue 'window' in the helmet.
Better than in other mods where you see some badly textured faces.
The armor standing away from the arms in the first shot looks fine, as it is realistig.
pockets are good. neck armor 0wnZ0r$.
    all over all.. great.
    real sentences.. not my thing.

Yeah the "window" has been on for a while. Anyways it's more commonly reffered to as a visor.

I didn't just add the laser light for eye candy. I specifically added it as per a request from Charlie, who mentioned he was going to add the lasers in game.

However, he's pretty busy working on more important things at the moment, so I don't know if this is going to make it in or have to be reserved for a version 2 thing.

Really, really nice! I like the collar.
  • SurgeSurge asda4a3sklflkgh Join Date: 2002-07-14 Member: 944Members
I like the collar. Makes them look much more... well-equipped, instead of Backstreet Boy wannabes. (Don't ask me where that came from)

Laser sight is good.... I like how you fixed the hands to look like their first-person equivalent (the fingers are no longer gloved). I really love how the jumpsuit is grey now.

I'm also glad that you removed the little arrows under his eyes.

    *thwap*

If there's one thing you can't say about NS, it's that the models are poor. NS has better models than almost *any* *released* game right now. Check out www.readyroom.org if you need more convincing, nukem - there are some great shots.

one question about the laser thing, if i understand right the purpose of the lasers atleast in modern days is to serve as a quick orientation guide as to where you are pointing your gun at a particulair moment, and if the same is to be with the ns lasers would it not make alot more senese to put the laser on the gun instead of hte helmet, since any person in the right sense of mind can pretty much figure out where hes looking without the help of a laser. And if im wrong and i think i am what is hte laser to be used for ?

Ooooh, ingame laser sights eh? Those'll be atmosphere enhancing like crazy, methinks, and helpful because you can see where your teammates are looking.

Theoretically, I would imagine (back-story-wise) that the gun and the laser sight are linked together so they *do* point in the same direction; this allows one laser sight to be used with any weapon the marine equips.

In-game, there is no laser sight. The sight on the model is cosmetic only.

/me wonders how this got a page of comments overnight

Anyways I was wondering Squeal Like A Pig, why you didn't keep those yellow aroow things underthe eyes(like in the header at the readyroom). I would understand if it was for the realism, but then again NS isn't aiming for realism.

When i first saw the original (?) marine model i was stunned. That was because i didn't realize he wasn't so cool at all.
    I'm sorry!

    Regarding the new version.
I'm happy they removed the goofy tatoos and the blue jeans. But the brown thing on the belt still looks very 1939 and he could still look much less like a halloween kid...

My opinion is: Cory has GREAT potential but he's making the marine way too plastic-actionfigure when it should b more ergonomic-clothing-a lá-space-manga-marine-badass

I like the style. Makes me think of a cross between an american marine and a roman Legionaire. We get too many stock "bulky shoulder pads" and "sliding clear helmet" and grey/silver-ness. The model is real and human, his style is very TSA. We have to remember that a NS is not in the laser guns and robotic suits future. It's a little sooner on the timeline. These guys are a different breed of marine than the StarCraft's. These guys use machine guns, not plasma rifles. I personally love the model, great job Squeal.

We're in all the North American time zones, as well as some European ones, and maybe a couple over in Asia or Africa.

Is it possible to make the commander be the only one to see the lazer beam? Cause it would be a lot easier for him to see where teh marines are looking and then he could see where there might be an alien in some corner. Just a thought, bad or good, have no idea.

[edit] Woah! Flashback! That guy to the right looks exeacly like the marathon guy [/edit]
  • Jack-0Jack-0 Join Date: 2002-05-01 Member: 563Members
from what i gather and lookin at the screenies of the commanders veiw, i think he/she that is at command can tell which the marines are facing and adding laser beams would not really help that much if what i write is true(possibly make it too clutter for the commader "hey go point that frickin laser beam else where!!!"). Also if and when the commander see aliens he/she can put a way point down in the direction of the alien presence to get the marines to look the way if there looking around in other directions.
