The Onos And The Old 1.0x Maps

<div class="IPBDescription">And how it affects balance.</div> The old, classic maps, that were imported from 1.0x with minor or no changes at all, aren't very Onos friendly.

This can be forgiven by the fact at the time they were made, Oni were rare, most games ended before he was avaiable. But now that they are common, an issue that wasn't a problem back in 1.0x days has appeared: Old maps have too many narrow hallways. Way too many.

You see, this isn't really a problem in clan matches, because there are few players, and they are organized. But for 10x10 public play and above, its a nightmare.

For the basis of the argument, take the ns_nothing map as an example. The 2 entrances to marine_start can only fit one Onos and a time, and nothing more than an Onos, not even an skulk. It means if you are an Onos with carapace, and you rushed the marines base and now need to heal, if any alien tries to come in, it will block you for precious seconds, time enough for 4 marines with basic lmgs start firing at you. You see, all you need is 1 Onos to block the hallway, but you can also put in 4 marines and theres still room for more! Clearly a marine advantage. What if they were 6 ha+shot/gl outside the powersilo hive? Dead Onos.

And there are many more hallways like that on nothing. Power silo has 2 just outside it. You can't get more than a single Onos at a time. But they can place in 12 turrets and 6+ marines. Same happens for almost everywhere near the cargo area, and the stairs of the great viaduct hive are slow and tricky to climb, I have seen too many people getting stuck at it. Its not something that desperately needs fixing, but could use some help.

There are also the elevators. The slow, small elevators, that except for one of them, can't carry more than 2 onos at a time. They won't fit in there. But they can keep 4-5 marines up there and give free hits on the Onos while he waits for the slow elevator to go up.

Things like this also happens on the maps ns_tanith (on a lesser degree) ns_hera (just on marine start entrances)

My suggestion, for all the mapmakers out there, do not, ever, put narrow hallways on the hive entrances of your map, or the marine start. Put in enough room for an Onos and 3-4 skulks, or even 2 Oni. For the sake of public play.

And if you are a player and play as an <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> please don't stand still on a narrow hallway. Either you go in or go back, just move and don't block other people.

that's simply a disadvantage of going onos. if you're an onos, warn your team to stay out of your way, and be extra careful when in combat.

You know, when you crouch as an onos you take room equal to standing marine. So if all onii travelling the elevator crouch, you can fit 4-8 onii in. Note that crouching onos has reduced width, length and height so you can quite easily sneak through some doorways while someone else occupies it. That sneaky little onos!

In public servers warning your team about something and not warning are often the same <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
They will follow you because they want to frag, and know an Onos is a good distraction so they can kill one or two marines unnoticed.

The problem is, if they stop holding down crouch key, chances are they will get stuck at the elevator. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
