Exam Results

Post the misery
Got my exam results today.

Beforehand I was mentally picturing my grades;

Computing, I expected C-A. Business Studies, D-B. Maths (completely screwed up one of the papers) E-C. Physics (had most boring teacher in universe, didn't really try), E-D.

And they came out as:

Computing: C. Well, I was kind of hoping for a B since it WAS my best subject, but oh well :/

Business Studies: C. O.k, that's fair enougth, I could have tried harder, C is about right.

Maths: E. Wha.... ow.... my pride hurts. Looking at the results for individual papers, I got an E on one (the one I totally screwed up) and a U (yes, as in ungradeable) on another. The one I thought I did not too terribly in.

Physics: I was braced for the worst. A D would have been an achievement. (tbh D isn't that bad at A-level)

U. Yep. Ungradeable. I admit I didn't try too hard, but a U? So.... all those mind-numbing lessons, all for nothing? Absolutely jack ****? Thank you very much Mr Dyer. Thank you. Really. So all those double-physics tuesdays were pointless?

The question now is, what do I re-sit? If I do Physics again, I really don't think I can improve that much, since I didn't really learn the stuff in the first place (thank you again Mr Dyer, really).

And before you post "Don't be so hard on Mr Dyer, it's your fault you didn't learn it", well, yes, fair enougth, but seriously, he had the most droning voice in the history of doney voices. I couldn't pay attention to him for more than a few minutes. The rest of the class agreed he was not a great teacher, and i'm just waiting to see their grades.

As for maths, I suppose I should re-sit at least one paper and see if I can crank it up to a D. There were 3 papers, the one in January I got a C on, which I was pretty pleased with, and the other two, as I just said, were E and U. I will probably re-sit the U.

Come on then, post your misey

If anyone posts "I GOT ALL A'S I R TEH ROXX0R I R GOING TO 0XF0RD" I will kill you with my bare hands. Yes, over the internet. I will find a way.

Ok In Scotland we get standard grades. Best is 1 worst is 6 7 is fail.
    I got :

    A 1 in computing (expected)
1 in Modern Studies (also expected)
    1 in accounts (again expected)
    And a 1 in maths (expected a 2/3)
2 in physics (was hoping for a 1 but 2 is ok)
    2 in English (expected)
    2 in PE (expected)
3 in german (I cant speak to well or write to save my self in german I can read it well tho and understand it

    On the whole quite good.

I would resit the Maths U paper, and possibly some of the Physics exams, to try and get things to an E at least. Above all, don't stress about it, and take your time to make the right decision for what you want to do.

My results should of been a lot better, but still satisfactory on the whole:

    Microbiology (medical) A
    Biochemistry (DNA and stuff) B
    Zoology (Animal taxonomy) A

So overall was relatively pleased. 2nd year is pretty cruisy (I'm at Univeristy).

As for physics, I wouldn't really worry about it unless you plan to do physics. It is a totally miserable subject IMO.

Then again, I'm a biologist so I'm biased

Not sure if this really counts, but I did score a 4 (from 1-5) on an AP Physics exam. Basically counts as a B for college courses and provides me with 10 lab based credits. I had though that I had only gotten a 2 or something though (3-5 gets you credits).

Hooray for Mr. Batten and his awesome Physics course...you wont find a better Physics teacher.

In Scotland we have highers. I completely messed up my Math higher first time round, didn't pay attention and scored one of the lowest scores of all time apparently. Went back next year to resit, actually paid attention and came out with a high "B" bordering on an "A", so it can be done..

Ah, my final collage GPA was somthing like 3.2, which was good considering that half my classes were graded on artistic acheivement, and the other half were boring as heck. Also, only five members of my class actually graduated, so there you go.

Well, if I possibly can, I'm going to take AS electronics next year, although it may be too late to join now....

The thing that p****s me off the most is that after all that (lack of) effort in physics, I have NOTHING to show for it. A U is worth absolutely jack poopy. Even an E is worth 20 points I think.

The maths paper I will just have to buckle down and get on with. I am REALLY bad at maths (i.e, not naturally skilled at it as some people are, i'm very slow with mental arithmatic. 4 times 7! Um.... ah..... *counts on fingers* 28! ) so I would be happy with a D tbh.

The paper I got the U with I didn't think I did too badly in, but apparently I did.

The E paper I totally screwed up, only answered 2 out of 4 questions because the last 2 were written in another language or something...

I fully understand your hatred of maths, I'm terrible with numbers as well. I'm more a visual / literary sort of guy, I cruised through subjects like English, Art, Biology, Physics etc, it's just the way my brain is wired I guess. Pictures, facts and writing stick in my brain, numbers ( and obscure geometric formulae ) fly straight out the other ear.

It is do-able though if you put the effort in and pay attention. Console yourself with the fact that most careers require no more than standard numeracy skills.

( before the science and engineering types jump in, note how I have italicised the word "most".. )

No misery here, sorry. I sat on my backside, barely did any work, and got into the course I wanted to at uni. Now I sit on my backside barely doing any work and get good marks in different exams...

I did my exams some while back. Not wanting to bore anyone with individual scores, my average is a straight 'B'. Seeing that my social service accounts for two waiting semesters, it's enough to start with virtually any kind of subject on a German uni, so I'm not too unhappy

Here are mine. I did Scottish highers.

    Computing: Higher C

    Physics: Higher C

    English: Intermidate 2 A

    Geography: Intermediate 2 A

    Maths: fail

Well Higher maths is incredibly hard compared to Stanard Grade and I had 3 teachers, 2 were crap.

Yeah, for the benefit of English forum goers a Scottish higher is / was roughly equivalent to an "A-level"..

( I'm assuming they still exist...high school was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..)

Yeh but 41% of the english higher pupils failed. Not because we are stupid but because the stupid SQA changes the exams every year.

My GPA is somewhere around a 2.0... I try to look on the bright side -- I'm halfway to a 4.0! all-in-all, higher education sickens me. for almost everyone in the US, it's not about broadening your horizons and becoming a well-rounded person anymore; it's about training for a job. why don't we just dismantle our universities and replace them with trade schools? a couple days ago, I described my bedroom as a morass of iniquity to an ivy league magna **** laude graduate friend of mine, and I think she thought I was talking about the weather...

The thing that p's me off the most is that I was GOOD at physics in secondary school (i think that = middle school), I got A's in both Physics and Biology, and a B in maths.

So you can see where I get off blaming Mr Dyer. <-- actually that is quite a good likeness of him

I also get p'ed off by people saying "I GOT THREE A'S AND A B!!!" and I reply, "What subjects?" and they say

"Social studies, Geography , Art and Drama".

Ah yes, really HARD subjects then..... (o.k, maybe Geography isn't THAT easy)

They have good grades in crap subjects, I have crap grades in good subjects [/bitterness]

They are not necessarily easier subjects, just because less is known of them. I certainly could not get a decent grade in Drama or Art at A level, whereas I got 4 B's at science subjects. I am just not skilled at acting or painting, and that skill can be as valuable to a future career as the ability to discuss the topic of Asylum seekers in depth and in German.

If you are willing to put in the effort, at exam level or when job hunting, that is what will allow you to reach your potential, and to enjoy at your final destination. Letters on paper are a good way to guide yourself, but they are not the end of the world.
