I can see that now since you (or whoever) lock the topic before I get a chance to explain what i mean. I'm not gonna do that now though cause you'll probably lock this one too.
I think we had a very fruitful discussion going on there.
If there was more time more interesting viewpoints could have come to light.

I think there was a bit of confusion in that thread - whether its goal was to replace "bob, tiny," etc as the *nicknames* in the forums, or to actually select *official* names for the aliens.

If it's the former... (as I think you said) good luck - you can't get an established community to change their way of thinking.

If it's the latter (which I think is what MonsE assumed), then he was right to lock it - the team is trying to cut down on the use of the "nicknames" because they eventually want to establish official names and have people actually *use* them. Frankly, most of the PTs don't use the nicknames at all, except for "flier" - we call them by their level numbers, for lack of a "real" name to call them.

It's the former. Thank you coil.
If the team doesn't want us to use nicks, then why didn't he say so? Or even make an official announcement?
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
You are being somewhat melodramatic, Doc. Coil is perfectly correct in his statement. We have not made an official announcement because it's been in endless debate amongst the NS team itself. But our thoughts on the current cutesy names are well know.

/me goes off to add Bob, Tiny, Pudgy, and Blinky to the swear filter.

Ok, you lost me. I'm not ANGRY if that's what you think.

EDIT: Ok, now i got it. But I didn't know the team hated the nicks. I though team members came up with them.

Whole debate is kinda silly, we'll just call those critters whatever we want anyway. Nicknames just happen, and they never go away. Vivá la revolution!

I guess you missed this thread:

We hate the unofficial nicknames

5 pages, with myself, Merx, Flayra, and a bunch of testers talking about how we dislike the names and hope to have the real ones finalized soon and the old ones stamped out.
• doctopepadoctopepa Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 99Members
Oh... LOL! But it would have been even more funny if the postname really WAS "We hate the unofficial nicknames"...

As you can see I must have missed that one. Hurry up with the names. And make 'em short and cool, or nobody will use them...

Didn't Moleculor come up with the name "Bob"? Here I was trying to be cool by using the nicknames.... I WAS ONLY TRYING TO FIT IN, DAMN YOU ALL!!

Erm, MonsE, please read the last phrase of Flayra in the interview on HL Italia.

Be thankful we took it off-topic, on-topic it will only get locked again by our benevolent dictator.

Now how many smilies do I need to denote my never-ending sarcasm...

Flay said the interviewer added that. Probably he wanted to sound like he was "in" the community and stuff. (I am talking bout the interviewer)

When are you going to learn that I am infallible?

/me changes name to Pope MonsE the 1st, and moves this to off-topic.

Yes, that was added by the interviewer without the permission of Flayra.

And yes, I ended up spawning the name Bob (with a simple two word post). I like the nicknames, as they're easy to use, and sound somewhat 'degrading' to the aliens..

I personally will continue to use all the nick names I'm used to (Bob, Builder, Flyer, Level Four, and Oh Crap) in game until the rest of the -community- changes.

Why? Because that's the only way to be understood.

Just to drag this on-topic again... Yes, there is no democracy in the forums. Welcome to NS.

The nicknames will probably go away when NS comes out and other, non-forum people play, they won't know what forum folks are talking about.

Interesting enough, the 'NS' - acronym was already used by a dictatorship (take a look at my location and guess which).

So my friends, shall we have an uprising today? Right, which pointless attempt at a political system shall we try, another Dictatorship or a Democracy, or shall we appoint me king and become a Constitotinal Monarchy.

But seriously, "Benign dictatorship" is really the only way a forum can fuction properly, I think. A democracy just wouldn't work.

Lol, I think 'latent dictatorship' describes it better. It only gets interesting when SpiderMonkey and Jedisar start sending nasty PMs. I've gotten quite a few nasty PMs.
