Pings Too High

<div class="IPBDescription">Is there a way to lower them?</div> I just got a 256k connection (last week it was a 33k <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> )

Now, when I was with 33k, my pings used to be things like 600, 700.
Now that I got a 256k, my pings are 300 avarage.

I'm not sure how fast is 256k for on-line games, or even if the normal ping for 256k users is 300, but I think it isn't, because I downloaded NS V2.0 in one hour. As you can see, I'm kinda of a newb on broadband connections, since I'v always had modem connections.

Anyways, is 300 ping the right amount? Is there a way to decrease the ping, apart from closing all other applications? And is 256k a good connection speed for playing NS, and other on-line games?

    I had 256K DSL and my ping was around 80. So yes, you should be able to get pings which are under 100 on servers which are close to you.

    What did you set to your connection speed when you installed NS?
    If the settings are for your 33K modem, then that explains why the ping is so high.

    There is a console command to set right connection speed, so you don't have to reinstall, but I don't remember what it was.

    Maybe someone else can tell you that. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    True, I normally go to servers which are close to me. Is just that in Brazil, we don't have much options, specially for NS. Here, everyone plays CS, which sux, since no one knows what is NS.
    I normally go to Chi-Mayham when it's not full, but that's like, 5000 kilometres away from me.
    I also heard there is this program which sppeds up internet connections, but I'm not sure if that's true.

    And now that you mentioned it, it's set to 112k (i think, but it's not 256).
    I'll try changing it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yea, being in Brazil might be the problem. Try looking at the server list and arange them by ping. I'll bet there are some good south american servers if you do that.
