Killing a lvl5 without turrets?

CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members

Is it possible?
All the stories and things Ive read so far say that once someone turns lvl5 everyone gets scared etc, marines all die then the lvl5 tries to destroy the turrets, it usually gets most if not all and then dies after massive turret inflicted damage.
Ive never read of a story where marines meet a lvl5, shoot it alot and it dies.
Does that mean that for a lvl5 to survive it just has to patrol the corridors but avoid turrets? If so then a standard tactic would just be waiting outside a marine base for people to come out.
If the marines cant leave they cant win, meanwhile the aliens get more powerful until they have enough resources to destroy everything!

I presume you guys have sorted this out if its and issue, I just wondered whether it was and how its been dealt with.
Thanks

I believe the best way is to beat a lvl 5 is to out think it. Put your self on the high ground above it or in a vent off to the side.

Course level 5 can kill turretts, but why post a story about a base killing when you can talk about the masacure you did on the 5 marines?
And yes Sgt. X, if a level 5 is alone, that is a very good tactic, he cant hit you but usually a level 1 is in his shadow, hehe

On one of the (few) games I commanded, the aliens were cleaning up and we were pushed back into our base. They had 3 hives, and FOUR of them decided to go level5. They all came charging into the base, destroyed the whole thing and all of my squad... with the infantry portal gone, no one could respawn. I jumped out of the commander console and from my raised position started pumping shotgun rounds into them. One had dropped to the turrets; I took out two of them before I ran out of shells. So I switched to my LMG, and managed to finish off the last one.

How, you ask? The windowsill in the Bast command area is wide enough that a crouched marine can stand in it and not be reached from the far side. They couldn't get to me, and had no level1 or level3 backup. It was just time-consuming... though I'm not sure what I would have done if my LMG hadn't been enough to finish off the last one.

please tell me the death animation for a level 5 is very satisfying.

I've seen three very lucky marines take out a level five without getting a scratch.

Would it be possible to build turrets in high places like that? I dont suppose they can fit in vents though

I knew lvl5 could take out turrets, I normally read of them dying when charging into a group of turrets and they still take out a couple of them.

Ta for the story coil, answers my question (I obviously knew it was possible for a marine to do it, I just wondered if it was almost impossible, like killing 3 gargs with a pistol and unlimited ammo is technically possible, though I dont know anyone who could do it unless they could be protected from them.

Not if they have Lev1's backing it up...

    Also, remember you could always...

I've been suprised the marines actually win a few games, with all the stories about invincible level 5s. Sometimes it just seems like level 5s are impossible to beat, even 3 marines in a room or hallway couldn't possibly take it down. But, I trust that its not much of a problem

It's not that, it's just that ppl like posting more dramatic stories and what could be more dramatic than a last stand against a lvl five.

Coil, I would have loved to be spectating during that game. Course, I would've eaten up my HD from leaning on the screenshot key. As long as I've got my screenies. .

Question: is there like a 5 minute period before each round where everyone stays in the RR? I thought I read about it in the NSTR a while back.

I believe it's more like a 5 second wait, then the doors open to the choices.

The aliens don't get 3 hives very often... a smart commander will secure at least one, or at the very least keep up a strong attack so the aliens can't hold all 3 hives. And if they can't get 3 hives, they can't get their level5.

It's like the Praetorians in AvP2. Concentrated fire from multiple opponents causes massive damage, even though it has lots of armor. Well, that and shotgun slugs, AP pistol bullets, minigun, or railgun.

Maybe it will be something like that. Like, bullets have a chance of just bouncing off a Lev5's armor, but if you shoot them in the right spot (like between plates), it will do damage? That would be cool. But of course, rockets and impact grenades wouldn't bounce off it... or heavy bullets.

This is just a thought. I'm hoping it might be something like that.

And remember superior numbers and good position lead to victory, also. But the easiest way to stop Level 5's can probably be summed up in a single word.... "prevention".

    BTW, what's NSTR stand for?

Natural Selection Technology Realease. It is a mappers tool you can use to run through NS maps to test them. I have a couple of NS maps and I run through them and check out the commander view/bob walk. I didn't realize how BIG hives were until I played around with the NSTR.

Question, how quick do laser mines arm? Can a marine run from a lvl 5 and mine up the hallway?

Is this English? Nukem, please try to spell and punctuate. Even typing "you" instead of "u" will make your posts 10 times more readable - and 10 times more read.

As for what I *think* you're asking... no, you can't carry turrets. Each turret placed by a commander has to be built by marines, which takes a decent amount of time. Much more time than it would take a level5 to run down the hallway and tear you in half.

i got a question about turrets.......
when the commander places the turret, the aliens can see it before its builded? or even began to bein builded? or they can see it like marines?....... when they are still not finished building u can destroy it?
  • Sgt_XSgt_X Join Date: 2002-03-01 Member: 261Members
When the commander places a building a 'ghost' of it appears and gets more solid as it is built until it's finished and plays its start animation.
  • DexMachineDexMachine Join Date: 2002-07-28 Member: 1023Members
when its first placed can it be damaged (removed) when it is still a ghost? as it gets more solid can get damaged, even though it is not built?
