Too bad I don't have time and money to create a game of my own direction. I have loads of ideas, and I would -guarantee- that it would be the scariest thing you've ever played.

I am however pretty sure that CoC will be a lot scarier. Hey, they've got the Lovecraft license, after all.
It happend cause a grenade went off and he BURST into the room all at the same time, I almost had a bloody heart attack He literally fell ovr luaghing, how nice of him!
I uttered a loud and histeric thank you through voice com, and then i looked around at my family, who were all looking at me like I was a total freak..
I guess I am.
For those who don't know the game, it's a Resident Evil-style survival horror game, except you're not some tricked-out, super-trained special agent; you're a father looking for his daughter in an abandoned, fog-enshrouded, creeped-out back-woods town. A few times in the game, you "shift" to a weird alternate reality which is defined by rusty machinery, blood stains, metal gratings, etc. Very creepy... moreso because this alternate world is a twisted mirror of the real world.
So you go into the hospital in the normal world, and eventually are led to the elevator. You get in the elevator, see the control panel:
[3]
[2]
[1]
[B]
You've already been to B and 1, so you hit 2. You go up... the door into the hallway is locked. You go back in, hit 3.. the door is also locked. You get back in...
...and there's a [4] staring at you. And you just *know* that everything's about to go to #### all around you... and you have no choice but to hit the button. And of course, when you exit the elevator, you're back in that freaked out twisted world.
Silent Hill isn't jump-out-of-your-seat scary... it's more like sleep-with-a-light-on-for-the-next-month-and-you're-STILL-afraid-to-close-your-eyes scary.
then, in a close second, X-com: Ufo Enemy Unknown, entirely because of night missions against Etherials and sectoids...
after that, X-com: Terror From The Deep, also because of night missions...
when i was really young and i played these games constantly, they gave me an irrational fear of aliens that is still with me in part, but it seriously used to be that i couldn't sleep at night because i thought they were coming... but i'm fine now
Alone In The Dark (1)
This is THE game that started the whole horror/survival genre, which Resident Evil copied damned near completely years later. This game was one of the first 3D games (3d models on a pre-drawn background heh.) The models weren't even textures heh, just each polygon was shaded a color.
But it was a really immersive story that had tons of environment and history to it (you could read all about crap in books you found along the way). Also, something very worthy of a mention nowadays, is that the evil there was PURE SUPERNATURAL, DEMONIC evil. Not this "corporate DNA engineering gone awry" crap that's so popular these days...
[edit] ohh, silent hill isn't just "things jumping at you" scary eh? good good, i hate that. I'm okay with the 'man this is wierd' scary, i just hate things jumping at you. Too bad its on console only...

Resident Evil Seris: After the tunnel scean with that one piano song, i was freaked.
Half-Life: Got right to the point, kinda scary.
ye resident evil 1 made my skin crawl...aliens vs predator being marine was real scary too.

btw alone in the dark was the creator of this type of game and is a french game (hehe we french rooool)
And silent hill, the game was ok, but when you've played all the resident evils its just another horror/survival game.
Alone in the dark was ok, But unlike doom blocky creatures didnt alarm my, due to the fact they where blocky and moved strangly my mind didn't register that they could possibly be real.
System Shock is my all time scariest game, Your sitting there alone in your house with the lights turned off for effect and surround sound blaring creeping through empty hallways and bam! a ethereal image appears before you, of course you jump in your seat and fire off a dozen rounds before you realize its another damn ghost image. Or youll be going through a highly infested area and youll come across a room with that familiar chittering and you just know if you go around that corner youll come in contact with a room full of open skull chimps, there brains glistening in the light just waiting to blast you.
And Shodan! Oh The whole Idea of Shodan gave me wet dreams....mmmmmm....
Yeah, they were made a little weird looking(in a bad way). I mean for the most basic creatures, all you had to do was turn on your flashlight and they would retreat.

As an overall horror game, Silent Hill all the way. I seriously had trouble sleeping for a few weeks after playing that game
Half-Life was scary, but only because of the headcrabs. They wouldnt have been so freaky if it weren't for the zombie scientists that had them attached to their heads. Knowing what a headcrab would do if it got me made me really nuts for a while . . .
I actually feel much the same way. I feel that in one way, the model helps -- if you look at the head of the zombie model, you can make out the eye sockets and the teeth of the former scientist's face, underneath the headcrab. That REALLY creeps me out.
