keep it simple I am a complete comp nub
I get "CL_Parse Server Message: Illegible server message- svc_bad" a lot 5 times in a row one time I tried to join a server, one that I've played on before too. I also get a whole bunch of other error messages but I didn't write them down. Is there something I am doing wrong here? FYI, in case this has anything to do with it. . . I don't use cheat/ hacking programs, I occasionally have CD (the most updated version) running, I typically leave AIM on when I play, and music c/o windows media player or a website. Thanks for the help, and have a nice day.

As for the error message, I have no idea what to do about that, I've never even seen it before. Good luck, though.
i get all sorts of jacked up errors on the lan even. Its not his router persay. Its actually the clients setup. You know under internet games were you set your connection speed? yeah, set that to the correct speed. Also, My friend could not join from ASE. always kicked him out. But connecting from the ingame browser seemed to stop his problem.
These are a few solutions that worked for me, hope it helps.

I found this after a search in the Server Support Forum. Here's the link - Clickeh
Hope it helps

*edit* in game browser is that like trying to connect from the hlmp://64.237.35.206:27015/ thing? (if not what is it?) *trying to remember* but I don't think I got those errors when I was trying to connect that way, but if the server's full (which it almost always is), and the reserved slot is already taken it makes my computer really mad. BTW mad= windows "send error report message," and color going nuts, etc.
Have you tried using All Seeing Eye to search for game servers?

rate - should be around 8000
cl_updaterate - should be 30
cl_cmdrate - should be 30
Then look for a file called custom.hpk. Select the file and delete it. Whenever this file gets over 1,000kb--delete it. I forget why (I learned this trick back in my CS days ) but I recall it had something to do with decals or sprays in-game. Anyway, a new file will be created the next time you play and will continue to grow in size until you delete it again.
Try that, then check back

my config said:
rate - was 6000.0000 (insted of 8000)
cl_updaterate - was 20 (instead of 30)
cl_cmdrate - was 30 (was 30)
custom.hpk. has about 2029 KB in it, are you sure I just delete this file?
Thank you for all your help so far, but i have a few questions.
What do these things mean? If it was something to do with decals and stuff, isn't that server side? I thought servers had files to remember decals/ sprays, are you saying that this file, that I'm guessing everyone has, is our personal computer remembering peoples sprays, and why would they have a file for that client side? Thanks.

rate - was 6000.0000 and is now 5000 (should be 8000)
cl_updaterate - was 20, and still is 20 (should be 30)
cl_cmdrate - was 30, and still is 30 (should be 30)
um the one number dropped farther away from where it was supposed to be? Was that supposed to happen?
How do you change the rate? Please explain step by step if you don't mind, otherwise I'll be so confused.
C:/SIERRA/Halflife/ns
And use Find[Search>Find] type in rate untill it finds it, and Edit it, then Save.

If youre playing NS you must always have C-d running in the backround.
99% of servers in NS use C-D right now.
