Onos/gorge Misnomer?

DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
<div class="IPBDescription">names reversed? has this been discussed?</div> Main Entry: 2gorge
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): gorged; gorg·ing
Date: 14th century
intransitive senses : to eat greedily or to repletion

Main Entry: onus
Pronunciation: 'O-n&s
Function: noun
Etymology: -- more at ONEROUS
Date: circa 1640
1 [Latin] a : BURDEN b : a disagreeable necessity : OBLIGATION

GORGE means to eat greedily, which is what an ONOS does to marines.
ONUS, which ONOS has always reminded me of, means a burden to bear; the GORGE bears the disagreeable necessity of building RTs and hives when his teamies get to go around killing...

it also used to confuse me when people talked about 'fatties' -- as you can fit at least 2 or 3 gorges inside an onos... why isn't teh onos teh fatty? though gorges are fat in a cuter sense... :>

at least fades, lerks, and skulks are aptly named...

    ...and I'm sure 'lerk' doesn't remind you of 'lurk' ...

    seriously, the fade blinks (fades) in and out of rooms, slicing people up
    the lerk lurks in vents and behind corners gassing, etc
    the skulk... skulks... I'll post the definitions of skulk, lurk, and fade too if you make me =P I'm not looking very deeply into anything; there's a direct correlation between alien species and the English definitions of their names, except for the onos and gorge...

    Well the Gorge used to gorge, it used to recieve 3x the res of the others, effectively gorging on the res.

    this point is well taken :> and the onos didn't used to gorge itself on players, either... I'm not seriously suggesting that they switch their names, just trying to incite a conversation on something I think is interesting :>

    Well when i see and onos...i think Oh know!! maybe that has something to do with it

    gorge--> a large mass--- a certain seam on a collar---a canyon--- a large meal---to devour.

    gorges are fat...not as big as an onos. but fat...maybe giving it the name gorge was actually suppose to be funny.

    dunno ask the person that came up with the names. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    not all names derived from a literal definition.. Onos is simply "OH NO!" with an S on the end.

    "Skulking" is hanging around and being up to no good. It connotes sneakiness and delinquency.
    "Gorging" is eating a lot.
    "Lurking" is lying in wait, hidden.
    "Fading" is appearing and disappearing.
    "Onerous" is burdensome and unpleasant.

    So...

    Skulk = something that hangs around in shadows and causes trouble
    Gorge = something really fat
    Lerk = something that hides in vents and strikes when you don't expect
    Fade = something that comes and goes without warning
    Onos = something big and heavy you'd like to avoid

    Make sense?

    works for me. I shall stop discussing it and go devour some players now.

    The gorge is called as such because he is chubby, the onos is big but not overweight.

    ONOS:n. derivitive of phrase used by TSA marines on first contact with species, i.e. " OH NO!"(ex.) which became OHNO (n.) and eventually ONOS reffering to a single member of a species containing many individuals, resembling a Terran rhinocerus concieved while mother was under the influence of Cretin,Adro-booster,Stackers,Methamphetamines,HGH,RGH,Chromosomal editation therapy,Nanomeds,Gamma Radiation Exposure and Crack

    Gorg:n. name of dog-sized species of alien coined when TSA marines observed it building a structure. It was disgorging a large lump of biomass, hence gorg

    gorge = gorging on resources
    comes from 1.x where gorge received more than his share of res

    onos = ? but probably 'oh no' plural <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    an easy reason why Gorges are called fatties and no onos..
    Onos aren't wider than they are tall <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ulatoh has it (blue rose saga?)

    The ACTUAL original explenation of onos is that the only thing that was recieved over radio comunications during the first onos attack was a series of people screaming OH NO and then the line going dead <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
