This is semi-offtopic, but am I the only person who finds Half-Life's storyline utterly stupid, predictable and clique? Why was every single review raving about the dynamic and twisting storyline? I didn't see anything that even hinted at something "dynamic." I just d/led poke646 and enjoyed playing it a bit, but the story just didn't catch on. I recently was in a similar situation, having played many good HL singleplayer mods and wanting a new experience. Here's what I did:
Start up the original Opposing Force. Go to the configuration menu and turn the autoaim assist ON. You'll need it. Turn the crosshair OFF. Start up a game on Hard difficulty. Survive to the end boss without pressing quicksave. Ever. Same goes for saving the game in the menus, it's off-limits. Quickload is fair game.
Don't bother with the end bossfight if you don't want to do it, it's less skill-based and more about repetition. My first play through HL and Opposing force was on easy. I had heard the BlackOps were tougher on hard, but nothing had prepared me for the sheer reality of the statement.
Finishing OpFor and Blue Shift using these settings has since boosted my skills as an alien considerably. Crosshair? Bah.

May I be so humble as to suggest my very own Someplace Else? Warnings - it's (a) difficult, (b) difficult and © should be played with the Half-Life CD for musical purposes. If you do not take these things into account, I will find out where you live and poke you into a state of mild aggravation with a broken SCSI cable.
