Laser sights are used in situations where light or other factors would make using traditional sights or optics more difficult, such as low-light or when using infra-red or nightvision which can degrade image quality making lining up iron sights or crosshairs more difficult. That and they look cool to armchair commando types.
A better solution is to use a red dot sight, which is what the "scope" on the LMG would most likely be irl, no magnification, just the holographic dot. in a straight tube. They make shooting fast with a reasonable degree of accuracy quite easy, as you don't have to have the dot lined up in the center of the tube, unlike the crosshairs in a telescopic sight.
