<div class="IPBDescription">Some of those maps are too dark!</div>Attention fellow mappers!

Some of your maps may seem fine to you and other people, but on some computers those dark rooms will be pitch-black. This cannot be fixed, because it is the video card that causes this. Even with the gamma turned completely up, the moniter's brightness on full, and the moniter's contrast on full, the room will appear pitch-black. Please make sure that the lights in a room are not darker than 60 (that will only make sense to hammer/worldcraft users), and no darker than 40 if there are several lights placed closely together (about 64 pixels or less apart) so that darkness is not a problem. This will allow everyone who owns halflife to play all of the great ns levels without having a problem with rooms being "too dark." Thank you for reading this, and please check your maps.

P.S.- I am not part of the ns team, I am just a mapper like you.

    just download the program E-colour
a great program for configing  the overall gamma
    www.ecolour.com
this program is designed to get rid of the problem that not all monitors have the same brightness. exelent program

Not to be mean or anything, but who is to dicate whether or not our maps are too dark (Besides Flayra...)?  I certainly wouldn't want to be dicated like this about my map... or hear that about someone else's map... There are ways to get brightness levels higher.  Like E-Colour previously stated.  Please don't dicate, and please don't assume our maps are pitch black.  Thank you.  (This reply was not intended to offend or be mean to anyone, just merely make a point/statement.)

hmmmm.... dont think exact numbers for lights mean anything really.  ever hear of the -gamma switch for rad?  brightness can be modified via compiling.

Reborn, if a map is deemed too dark by our playtesters, then it will not be an official map until it is of an acceptable brightness.

One of NS's major specifications when designing maps is that it should 'be bright but FEEL dark'. IE, constant dark rooms and gloomy areas are discouraged unless it is possible to see what is going on.

Also, many pictures you see posted here havn't been adjusted to compensate for NS's gamma ramp, which means they appear darker than they would in game.

Fear not. All your visibility are belong to us.

Archriv! It's been a long time since I've seen that "map".

hmmm, sounds like hes badmouthing Fam =D (that pic is hilarious)

i think the amppers, devs and PTers can work out whether a map is too dark or not.

i rarely get a map thats *too dark* cause the cpu i use makes it easy to get through that 1 part of the hazard course that you *need* your flashlight on... i can run right through it without a problem (no, not with practice, it's just brighter then it was on the 1st cpu i tried it on) when i tried this for the first time, i was so amazed at how bright it was compared to the other... (around 3x brighter) anyways, just goes to show you how much monitors/3dcards can change brightness in a level, only solution if 1 map is way to bright for 1 cpu is to turn brightness down, or if its too dark, up... if neither works get that e-colour thing... if that still doesnt work... uhh, get a new vid card?

Wow, I never knew the central processing unit had anything to do with the brightness or gamma of the game. News to me.

But anyway, I have gamma turned all the way up and I cam always see in pitch-black areas.. with very old video hardware.

reborn... what are you talking about? You know you do have a flashlight as a marine and such, nothing is really to dark.  Plus, its for the atmosphere, its very creepy and cool.

Umm, i think ur refering to a computer that has had the gamma setting maxed out and maybe the moniter had brightness set to max, the CPU (which is the processor, not the video card and is not used in the place of computer) helps determine how fast the game will run.
