/me kicks this thread in the balls, effectively bumping it
Do hope your still working on this Maus. BlackPanther's High Poly won't every really compete with this once its done <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->.
Just a tiny note to say that I was a lazy mofo today and did little more than a few wee skin tweaks. I'll get it animated tomorrow, and have the model released early next week.
The piston has been rebuilt, and I find I don't like the little bit joining the three sections at the top so that's going to change. The only changes to the skin have been a few optimisations on the skinmesh, improved tops to the uper bellows thingies, and better definition on the others.
Also, last night I discovered that it's a piece of cake to animate this thing, so woo!

As you can see, there's some pretty terrible clipping of the node itself here. As to how to deal with said clipping I'm not sure short of remodelling the feet, which would add 100-150 polys to something that's already rather too big (~720).
edit: Hmm, I suppose I could try "remodelling" it using masked textures. It wouldn't look as good, but would save the polys.
It needs something in the middle though, because it looks like its a skinny toothing pick that would have its legs fall in on it if a skulk ran into it accidentally. THe tube needs to be beefed up, and then have some warning sights or something on it, similar to a LCD screen on it that is "useless" as Owen points out.
I was also wondering if its possible to make the flare3 sprite play randomly from the "breather" things on its sides when it folds up, but stops when if folds back down? And while its folding down, the center could release a bit of flare3.spr, and then stop when it folds back up and releases from the 3 legs. Just wondering, because that would be pretty intresting as well.

Well, it has to be small enough to fit into the hole on the resource node. It's a piston-y thing. Also, the more visibility there is through the centre the better - it's hard to see marines when you're munching a node with this model, and it's hard as a marine to see the alien munching your node.
It's not dying - there's just a small hitch in animating it. I'm trying to learn to animate in max, and there's something that'd be very simple to do in milkshape that's being an absolute dog in max.

EDIT: Like, the non-capped nozzle.
I LUFF YOU, MAUS!
/me runs around my block showing it off

I R lieking it,me want....me wait....[/primate]
How is it going to be animated, are the side bits going to move up and down or something along those lines?

true
BlackPanther's Resource Nozzel and phase
And
My very bad IP, Proto, Armoury, and CC
For my own creations the poly count is around 6 times more and i still get a solid 60fps, so keep the polys coming.
Oh, it still looks good but the middle pole thing does need to be changed somehow.
(2) The middle pole isn't geting anthing added to it.
keep up the blah blah blah, id love to see it in game.
