Hardheaded Comms

Firepower does not always win the game
I just played a stupidly long game on ns_veil... actually, I didn't even get to finish it. I quit because it was so disgustingly drawn out.

Anyway, this is how it went:

At the start of the game, I ramboed to the closest nozzel and asked comm to drop a RT. Built it, moved onto the next. Built it, moved onto 5b Hive. I told comm not to worry about the double nodes, since we could easily siege it all out without trouble and we did so - had a one hive lock down, four nodes, and soon seven nodes when we capped the nozzle at Topographical and sieged out Nanogrid. I thought "Alright, we won. What timing - five minutes and things went so cleanly."

Resources were simply pouring in. He decided to farm up the double nodes - you couldn't make a move in the room without hitting a turret. This is where things went bad... he kept handing out nothing but shotguns. Shotguns are nifty and all, but we ended up losing double nodes because no one had a grenade launcher to get rid of the bile bombing gorge in the vents... even after I repeatedly requested a GL. I figure "Oh, what the Hell." and go onto his waypoint. It's a room FILLED with HA/Shotguns, and he orders us sit and farm the place up. Seriously - no less than 25 turrets were in the room, it was nonsense. Our HA would get devoured/redeemed by Onos one by one, as there was always someone leaving the farm to save double nodes which he wouldn't stop complaining about - our shotguns weren't finishing the job.

Finally, the gorge killed our TF in double nodes and the Onos rampaged about - killing about 300 res worth of equipment, then an additional 200 res because our HA were getting devoured/redeemed or gored by the three Onos in the room. For some reason, even directed fire of shotguns just made the Onos redeem - I didn't see a single Onos die in this game. I say "We have five nodes and they're limited to three, let's keep pushing." He insists on getting double nodes back, spending a countless amount of res on it. While we rebuilt doubles, we lost the other farm, and we're back to where we started, only he's yelling at us now for not being able to kill the skulk a hundred feeting away that are chewing on our TFs with our shotguns.

Guess what? While we get this farm back up, we lose the lock-down hive. So we pushed on to the next hive after sieging it out, and decided to farm it up too... Jesus, I've never built so many turrets in my life. At this point, everyone is LA because we're spending all of our res on sentry turrets instead of HA squads. Meanwhile, he tells us that we can't have HA/Shotguns/Welders because "we" lost double nodes, not a lack of communication.

So now, we're outfitting everyone in HA/Shotguns again now that we have control of 7 RTs again with one lock-down hive. As we head to the hive, we're confronted by a massive wall of OCs, DCs, and skulks all over the place. When I command, I deal with this by spamming medpacks and ammo all over the place and order everyone to have at it, blasting down the pety wall with the mighty shotgun. Of course, he has other plans - so we try to farm it up, all while we get swarmed by umbra'ed Onos, Skulks, and Fades... we'd shoot the damned lerk, but we're all using shotguns - yay. We lost the PG and about everyone there was mercilessly reamed by umbra'ed Onos who just redeemed ten feet away and got fully healed by a dozen of DCs.

He yells at us some more, I tell him that it wouldn't have been a problem if we had GLs and HMGs to deal with the lerk/wall of OCs. At this point, I quit. I wonder how painful the rest of the game was.

K? I often dont play as rine because it's so horribly boring. Even stalemates are so much more fun on aliens.

I'd assumed you didn't have 3/3 upgrades because with level 3 guns and a shotty or hmg onos die like nothing. But yeah. Hate it when the comm doesn't listen to vital requests like a GL. BUT if your comm doesn't know the value of the GL then you would have lost anyway.

Most games are lost because the comm doesn't pay attention to the map. hate it when he says: "Guys they just took over the third hive." I mean he should have received an alert by the first bite, but he's only telling us now AFTER the base goes down over there.

I can't blame some people for not noticing when a base goes down. I've had it happen a few times when I was more concentrated on the attack/upgrades/handing out gear/building a new base that I don't hear that "Base is under attack" that I hear constantly. It's different when your team mates are shouting on voice comm and teamchat that a base is under attack.

As for the shotguns not killing Onos, they were redeeming off of the turrets. Two people would shotgun, then one of the many turrets would nudge it down to redeem-level before we got the final shot off. That, and they blocked most of our shots - I would blast, and about five of the pellets would hit a turret. It was seriously excessive.

Stop winning games for newbie commanders and they wont keep doing it.

He didn't seem "newbie" in that he knew how to operate the console fairly well. He didn't struggle to figure out how to upgrade or how far you could siege. It was more like he just didn't know how to command in a way that rewards marines.

As a marine, it's fun to blast aliens. So let marines blast aliens - don't make them build a countless number of turrets just so you can siege out a hive like a ****. It's quicker, cheaper, and more fun. I'm baffled as to why there are commanders who suit everyone up in HA only to have them build siege turrets without fear of spores.

I'm pretty sure our team was dying to Onos so badly because they were just too damned unmotivated. After building turret after turret, you lose interest in the game and you're just kind of in this "state" where you mindlessly play, not putting forth any effort into surviving or killing the enemy. After all, if you die - you're just going to phase back and build some more turrets.

I wish more commanders would realize that most of their team doesn't want to stare at an unbuilt object and hold "e" down. Fortification is needed - yes, but you don't need to make a new base just to siege a damned hive every game.

BTW: Hampton's is a great server - always a good play, even though my lazy 'trick the newbie' tactics don't work there.
