Wow.....large games like this........oh yeah....the sexiness in a war based game....
There's already a WW2 mod in development for HL2, and no it's not called DOD....I forgot what it was called though....but it'll be sweet if HL2 can support up to around 60 people per server.
HL1 cannot support more than 32 people in a server. Not only would it not work due to map limitations, the engine itself can't support it.
NS's game type really wouldn't do 80 players good. Tribes2 does it great. There's a nice 60 player server that is almost always full. When there is real teamwork going on, it is a true sight to behold. Now a large BF1942 server like that? Now that would be sweet.
That reminds me. I need to go play that Pirate mod. Yarr!

There was plenty of non-brown/grey colors in Quake. It was part of the atmosphere anyways(thus intentional), brown/grey=murky, dark, scary, depressing.

isn't it awesome when there are like 2 people in a pt boat and they storm the beach and you can't hit them with your mg42 because it *sucks*!?!?!

uncapped for your pleasure, sir.
how did you know i was using shift and not capslock? a good guess, or you're very intuitive.
I love games with as many people as possible, what ruins them though are sniper weapons. And so far every mmofps has felt the need to include them.
I just prefer strategic team coordination and chaotic close quarter battles to the long range pot shot fests that plauge so many potentially great games.
If I ever design any game, the first question will be a) Is it fun? followed by b) Is it fun for the ther players.
Is conc jumping through a whole map and capping the flag in 10 seconds fun? Heck yeah. Is it fun for the other players who can't do much to stop you? No.
Is taking down a whole squad at 250m with a sniper rifle fun? Yes. Is it fun having 1 guy take out your whole team? No.

Balance must be found. The snipers must die!

have you ever played operation flashpoint? or flashpoint: resistance?
oh my god. sniping is so hard if they're dodging... at distances, you have to adjust for windage and elevation and bullet velocity!! XD
At the start, marines would spill out onto the hallways just not to get stuck... Skulks would litterally cover the walls... the combat would be non-stop, the killsprites would have to work overtime... Capping nodes away from your base would be damn near impossible, res for kills would make each side rich as hell, however, individual upgrades wouldn't mean too much, such as HA and stuff. Electrifying nodes would be pointless, they might kill... one or two skulks before being comped by 8 skulks.
Turret farms would be laughable, GL spam would be god all mighty, lerk spores would a killer, onos stomp would hit around +5 marines every time...

You'd really need bigger maps for this, otherwise people could barely fit in. And many more hives (spawn queue!).
About sniper weapons in online games, they're OK, really. Sure, they're strong, but they also cause target fixation. a sniper without someone covering them (and most game snipers tend to work alone) is often easy to flank and kill at short range. And, as Zig pointed out, it's often hard to hit moving targets at long distances. So keep moving!
Of course, then there's alternative sniping... Sniping with a rifle is pretty good, but (in OFP), the Carl Gustav wasn't too bad as an anti-personnel weapon either!
