sound goes buzzy after awhile
running a Asus A7N8X-DX with built int nforce2 stormstream sound.. sound sometimes goes buzzy while playing ns, only way to fix this is to quit and come back to server, this will temporarly fix it, but it will come back another day.
- i have latest driver updates, and patches for my computer, when i did have the eariler driver for the sound it did the same thing as now.
im wondering what might be going?
- first time this happened, we were goofing around in server, building buildings everywhere, but sometimes it happens when there arent to many buildings, this problem usually happens when im on marines.

I have the same motherboard and had the SAME exact problems.

I 1) Updated my bios. Doubt that it is necessary, and don't do it if you don't care to run the risk of messing it up.

But I found that 2) Reverting to sound drivers that came on the disk helped. I haven't had the problem after I did that.

Also, if you get the error happening sometimes, it does it on other programs that produce sound. Usually, I had like winamp, aim, irc, half-life/mods, and some other sound producing programs running at the time. Most often, Half-Life would screw up, but occasionally the other programs had the same issue on whatever sounds they played and you would have to exit and restart them.

It's not an NS related issue, but a driver thing. I haven't found support from Asus over it, but like I said, try out the drivers that came on the disk, as they apparently work well for me.

i have latest revision of bios anyways...
- as far driver's is concerned, i had the original from disc drivers, and new drivers from www.nvidia.com, both had the issue, might just be a matter of time before i find the right answer.. as in someone updates a driver.
- i think it could just be one setting that might be causing this... so many settings for the stormstream

I also have the exact same mobo as you, and have experienced these problems.

There are 3 known working fixes, try em all if you'd like:

1) Get the latest 2.45 Unified drivers from nVidia. http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_2.45
(I'm assuming you're running WinXP here). I had this sound problem with every driver before 2.45 (2.01, 2.03, 2.41).

if that doesn't work...

2) If you don't use the 5.1 output of the A7N8X-DLX, and say, only output to a 2.1 setup or headphones, then try installing the Realtek ALC650 codec drivers, v3.48. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97...8&Software=True
This is the driver I used until nVidia released 2.45 unified. Ofcourse, I only use headphones, and this driver (I believe) can only be used with 2/2.1 or headphone setups. They're almost guarenteed to get rid of the crackling, but I would try 2.45 unifieds first.

if that doesn't work...

3) Then the problem MAY be hardware related. Some people have reported that their sound crackling problems were caused by an overheating southbridge (the chip on the motherboard which controls things like sound, lan, usb etc...). Some people reported success with using an aftermarket heatsink on the southbridge...
But this is a little drastic, and will void your motherboard's warranty, so hopefully 1 or 2 works!

http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/ is a great forum for nForce2 problems. Specifically the Audio/Drivers/ASUS forums for you .

although I have no experience with your system specs,

what romano said in "3." is right.

On-board sound "chips" are known to cause problems for many various reasons.

I had problems with mine (voice comm) and I decided to buy the cheapest sound card possible, so for 10 bucks I've got a 6 channel, 5.1 sound card that performs to high standards.

Good luck.

I, too, have this exact board and this exact problem :|

Its a shame, too, its such a nice board

Ill try your fixes romano, the first one atleast. I've read about the southbridge overheating a number of times during my troubleschooting, but that might have to be a last ditch effort

Thanks

its the only thing drawing that board down!!. i just ignore the problem now, cause it doesnt happen that often...
but yeah... the overheating does seem like a answer to that... i have 2.45 drivers like right away..
i did use the out of the box drivers for a bit.. i rather not install the old audio drivers.. i really like how the stormstream is setup.
- board has great performance otherwise, hopefully nvidia or asus catches on to this, and releases a new driver to counter it

The drivers that romano posted fixed the problem, so far, for me. I havent had a single problem, yet.....

Wow, I also have exactly the same mobo and soundcard, and used to have exactly the same problem, I think it was the 2.45 drivers that fixed it though I can't be certain. Anyone else have that terrible echo effect when they use EAX? (I tried using A3D but it aint 3D sound).
