Why are we not allowed to start polls?

Because if the polls were open to the public people would constantly make polls in the same vein as "Do you like waffles or fries?" and so on. Basically, spam.

If you have a good idea for a poll, if you PM an admin i think they may be able to help you, i'm not sure.

I just think they are useful, especially in debate topics. You get to see what people think without the need to read every post.

They are needed in the Suggestions and Ideas forum most in my opinion.

Yes, they are, but that would rarely be the case if polls were open for everyone to create.

For example, when working on NS2.0, Flay turned to the community a couple of times when making decisions on certain features of the game. He made polls in order to do this. That, surely, was useful.

Anyway, why don't you just use third party poll software?

hmm, i think the admins should make a new forum called "polls spam".. it would be fun.
people would start polls like "which chamber do you preffer 1st" "sexiest thing in the world" -pamela a. -mrs. gorge
    etc

Polls use a much larger amount of bandwidth than regular posts do; that is why only moderators are allowed to create them.
