Ns_shotaro

<div class="IPBDescription">Close to beta</div> OK, I started a topic called "ns_shiva - my new NS map" but the name ns_shiva was taken, so i chose ns_shotaro.
I have been working on this for quite a long time actually, I know it needs some more details and the lightning is not finished(Not far away from finished tho).

The current back story is:

Out in space, on the planet of Shotaro ther is an essential communications station:

27.08.xxxx:

New astronauts arrive to take over the shift for the other people there.

Commanders log:
Day 1:

We have been taken on a tour around in the station. Everything seems to be ok here.
Lunch was.. as a space lunch should be i think. We had, ehm.. Nevermind. Didn't love it.
I was taken to the control room so the astronauts, who are leaving tonight, could learn to
me how the computer system is set up, quite normal I think.

Day 2:

We have been watching the computers and all the other stuff all day, nothing coming in,
nothing going out... Strange. And another strange thing is that we can't find O'keefe, he
seems to have gotten lost or something, but we can't find him, oh, there he comes running.

Day 3:

We have been getting alerts, on my computer it looks like someone has broken in to Cargo,
but we can't find anything that seems like it. And O'keefe is gone again, hopefully he
knows the whole place by heart soon, but it is annoying that we have to send people to look
for him.

Day 4:

Another alert, just now, we don't know what it can be, but we are searching all the largest
sections now.

Afternoon log:
O'keefe has returned safely but he keeps telling me to check down in generator room, for
something long that looks like, I don't know actually, but he says that it ran fast. He
also says that he tried to shoot at it, but then it vanished he says.

Day 5:

Frontiers men arrived, we know there is some kind of thing going on here.

Day 6:

Alert! Blinking red on "Generator" 5 of the frontiersmen were sent to check it out, they
didn't come back....

On to the pictures(I will not mention the names of the places):

    Hey, i likes it much. The texture combination is refreshingly different. Brush work looks good too, as does the lighting in most areas. some of the pics (7-10) are pretty dark tho. Wether they are brighter in game, i obviously don't know, but from what i see it's a bit too dark. Looks good otherwise.

    These screenies are a bit low quality, so the lightning is a bit brighter ingame, but, as you see, in the hive, there it is supposed to be dark I'm planning to make the into a generator room, so it will absolutly be some big changes there.. even, the map is maybe 60% done and I hope to release a beta next month.

    I just have a some cri-ti-si-sum (Whatever) about your map.

    In all your shots the floor is extreamly bland. Break it up some, pull some tiles up, have some pipes running alone the top, with a section torn out of the pipe, and have that section laying on the ground. A tile pulled up with a vent underneath it <i>anything.</i>

    <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=31108' target='_blank'>This map uses exellent lighting to break up its floors.</a> This is a very good way to break up floors, and adds a neat atmosphere.

    Good luck on your map, I'm trying to figure out how to work hammer ATM.

    As mentioned you shouldn't forget the floors. Even a little more detail on the floor does wonders.
    Also I wouldn't use the support_lab1 texture in your supports. It doesn't go well with the metallic texture of the other part of supports.
    Otherwise seems nice <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    [edit] Just noticed, that marine start window is amazing! And your corridors all look good.

    Thank you very much statusq, I'll look at the floors, maybe use the vent texture for the supports.

    Like it, much better acually. I like the dark areas <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    But the floor in the hive seems to be a bit flat.

    Why is there the res geiser thing without a node? Unless that's intended. ( second pic.)

    Ooops, was a bit inside the wall in spectator mode when I took that picture I think. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I also noted that the support_lab textures didn't go with the gritty metal, so I spent a little time yesterday making a .WAD of grittier, more metallic wall_lab and support_lab textures. If you're interested in using them, let me know and I'll post a link. I just gotta upload 'em...

    Erias! WEEEE.. I'd love to have some new textures of support stuff!
    Can you upload the wad today?

    News: I have taken a little break on shotaro, 'cause I'm testing to build some new styles for my next map, I can tell that the generator hive is almost done at shotaro, but it needs lightning work and so on.

    EDIT: New style, no! I just figured, I have made a new RR idea!
  • EriasErias Join Date: 2003-08-17 Member: 19878Members
    Textures uploaded... and I also started working on my NS mapping site, a place where I shall desposit my maps and textures and little words of mapping wisdom and... other cool shat.

    Anyways, here's a little preview:
    <img src='http://misc.miraclemedia.ca/ns/grit_remix.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    And you can download it here: <a href='http://erias.miraclemedia.ca/index.php?p=textures' target='_blank'>http://erias.miraclemedia.ca/index.php?p=textures</a>

    Please excuse the ugliness of the site, I just wrote the PHP and HTML, I haven't taken care of the CSS and graphics yet. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Also, stay tuned for when I release my WAD of new, original textures! It'll be <i>swank</i>.

    Get the zip sorted, cause I'd love to use these for my finished marine start <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    <i>WT</i><i>F</i>?!?! The downloads shouldn't be corrupt, they work fine for me in both IE and Opera!

    Hmm... I used a dumb MIME type (plain octets instead of the filetype) for the download, so that could have been the problem, if you're using a dumb web browser. I fixed this, so try again. And get a decent fricking browser, too. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    EDIT: Hey, btw, does anyone know who the original author of the wall_lab textures was? I'd like to credit the guy, he created an awesome texture set.
  • MasterGMasterG gmfbst Join Date: 2003-08-24 Member: 20169Members, Squad Five Blue
    I maybe think you got me wrong, It wasn't a problem with downloading the file, it was a problem with unzipping it.. It says the the zip archive is corrupt.
  • TequilaTequila Join Date: 2003-08-13 Member: 19660Members
    I second that, it's still corrupt <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
  • EriasErias Join Date: 2003-08-17 Member: 19878Members
    I figured your browser was corrupting the <i>download</i> due to the funny MIME type, but I guess I was wrong. The ZIP and RAR both work fine for me... I suspect it might be that I'm using winRAR to make the ZIP files, and perhaps you're using an older version of winZIP or something? I strongly recommend getting winRAR, in that case, its simply better than winZIP.

    Anyways, I'll recompress the files and re-upload them. If that doesn't fix things... well, I guess we're all really f**ked. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I use IE6 and WinRAR, and it's still FUBAR'ed <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> Try posting just the .wad file, it's less than 100kb bigger
  • EriasErias Join Date: 2003-08-17 Member: 19878Members
    Then there's no README, and I'd like to stay away from that. Plus, there's no F**CKING reason for this to not work.

    I totally don't get this. I'm using IE6 and winRAR, and I download and extract without a hitch. I just don't get it. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Just make the site hold the readme, I'm not enough of a b*stard not to give you credit for your work <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    That's only a temporary fix, really... if I distrubute multiple files or maps, I'm supposedly going to have the same problem with ZIPs and RARs. I also downloaded and reinstalled the lastest version of winRAR in the slim case that something was screwed in my version, but it still reads the archives fine. This is terrible.

    <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Okay... I added the option to download the WAD for now. And <a href='http://erias.miraclemedia.ca/readme.txt' target='_blank'>here</a>'s the readme, for anyone who cares.

    Still don't work, yehyeh..

    News: All I can say that I have done in progress is making an entire new RR.. But I think I might have gotten "allockblock:full" cause "leafthread" is taking more than 45 minutes.. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->..
    I will set it to compile this afternoon, as I'm going away for 2 hours and a little more, hope the map works..

    Looks like a great map.

    Love the window at the commanders point, gives the room some identity <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Like how you have went for a first person diary type style for your story, although could be re-drafted.

    Looking nice.

    NEWS!: Mr. allocblock has come to visit me, something that will slow my work ALOT! <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
    How du I know this for sure? I don't know it for sure, but it's quite obvious that I have gotten it, Leaftread has been taking over 2 hours, actually, it stood at 70% when I left, and it was on 70% when I came back...
    <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .. I will try to fix this as soon as possible, but it might take lots of time, but the map will get finished no matter what!!!

    Wee, I fixed my Mr. alockblock problem, was just some pipes in the roof of the RR that I have to remove!.. The work can go on as usual!

    EDIT: As I write this I am compiling my map and it has gone over to the RAD part, Leafthread was finished in 619.35 seconds, but I have got leaf saw into leaf errors, but thats only 4, and isn't such a big deal, if I get more I will have to fix those..
