[noob to the forum.. but long time fan]

Will Natural Selection have particle muzzle flashes like the Counter-Strike Fusion Pack 7.0, or will it have sprite flashes like Half-Life?

the muzzle plashes are prolly particle generated
however i'm not one of the dev team so i won't know for sure.

chances are you'll be to worried about the big elephant sized level5 running through your base to care if muzzle flashes are sprites or particle based ;)

Agreed, DOOM.  For the record, they are sprite-based.

    Good, keeps the fps down.

I hope there will be options of turning down all the fancy effects to save my fps. =P

From what I've heard you can turn off the particles and particles only work in Open_GL anyway.

You are incorrect.  I have been using nstr2 to test out my map and particles.  OpenGL lags me 2 much so I changed to Direct3D and the particles still work. (I have a Voodoo3 3000)

K my bad, maybe it's just software mode.

    Particles work in all modes.

It's the env_fog thing that only works in OpenGL.

you should make em 3d sprite flashes like The opera has, its bassicly a sprite that it rotated to form a cone type structure

I would -love- model based flashes myself. Better than particles or sprites.

But yeah, dunno how long it would take.

the multiple rotated sprites flahses are the best option available to HL inmho
  • BioHazBioHaz Join Date: 2002-02-18 Member: 226Members
Model baised flashes look funny.  Deus Ex had them, and they looked terrible, totally unrealistic.  I think the rotated sprite look is the best.  Maybe even particle systems for nonstandard bullet weapons, like rockets or grenades.

It eludes me how people can assign so much importance to a few pixels.

I myself am a shadow freak.  It frusterates me sooooo much when games don't have great shadows.. I don't know why it gets to me so much, it just does.  Like I hate how most games with shadows now a days have pixelated edgy ones.. those really get on my nerves.. Halo, Renegade, even Unreal Tournament 2003!!!.. I can't believe no one has made good shadows for the more popular engines.  How hard is it to do that?

Actually, I have a question/suggestion for a later release perhaps.  HL: Blueshift actually had a shadows code in it.  They had to be activated from the console but it did have one.  Is there anyway to read this shadow code or rip it out and put it in Natural Selection?  I just thing shadows add so much more realism, although I must say, realism is something NS is doing a damn good job with.

i'm pretty sure HL can render shadows, i think someone told me it was r_shadows 1 to enable it (not sure s:)) check the box HL came in, the screenshots show off the shadows

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, AHL has 3D muzzle flashes, and they're awesome.Only problem is they can lag horribly, so I just say we stick with sprites.

Maybe they can make the particle flashes client-side?... in another version...
  • WindelkronWindelkron Join Date: 2002-04-11 Member: 419Members
Hey, for the sprites, if you're not going to change them from the default Half-Life MP5 sprite (5-pointed star :shudder: ugly ugly ugly )... at least make the customizable, please

I can't live with that ugly star muz flash.  Yuck!!!

I would really like to se some particle based muzzleflashes or like the ones in AHL.

    I'm bumping this thread...

I cannot stress how important it is to me to have good muzzle flashes.  They will say "in the midst of the fighting you won't care to notice" but <b>I do.</b>  It makes all the difference.

You know, I once turned off the AHL muzzle flashes and got the sprite ones. They may have sucked, but by George I could <b>see</b> <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
moral: 3D muzzle flashes may be cool, but they aren't ALL positive.

I'm using an akimbo SMG replacement model, and I can't see squat, lol.  As long as I look cool before I die. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
