I love NS. I've played it since it came out, at the end of last october. I think its a damn fine game, fun as hell, really a nice job over all. The devs deserve every compliment they've garnered. But I find myself not wanting to play, because of the NS players.
I have come to really dislike the NS players, in general. Every game, _every game, I mute someone. Whining, yelling, making stupid noises, playing stupid music. I don't want to hear your bad dub of the Benny Hill theme, I want to hear that skulk that's coming down the hall. I seriously wish there was a way to squelch the text, too, from that player. How many games have you seen ruined by some idiot spamming screen after screen of garbage? There have been times I stop, look at the number of muted players, realize there are more muted than not, and leave the server.
A lot of NS players are rude. Insulting, arrogant, they will poke fun at the losing team even when its only losing due to being outnumbered 2 or 4 or 6. Yes, there are servers out there that don't leave the defaults alone. But heaven forbid they switch teams to even it out. And a lot of them aren't serious about playing the game, they want to fraghunt. Or just devour, and not try to take down the base. They will save for onos, then die in ten seconds, then heap scorn and derision on the team for not having gotten the second hive up. Or the _right chambers. Every damn game, someone is going to whine about the choice for first chamber. Often nonstop whining, from the time the first chamber goes down to the very end of the game.
I can't count the times I've left a server in disgust, lately.
I just loaded DoD. Been playing it for the last 12 hours. Tried several different servers.
I'm having fun. I haven't had to mute _anyone. The mic chat is to the point. They read teamchat! I've gotten more compliments on my team play in 12 hours than I have in the last month of playing NS, and I play the same way in both games, for the team to win. And its 99.99% bunnyhop-free.
Sure, there are CS idiots running around knifing their team (with FF off) or shooting meanlessly just to make noise. But for all their stupidity, they are few and far between, and don't ruin the game. The same can't be said of NS players. And no, I'm not talking about the CS idiots come to NS and screwing things up. A lot of NS clan players are every bit as bad, if not worse. I've taken to avoiding NS clan servers, due to too many bad experiences.
I don't think I'll play as much DoD as I've done NS, or with the frequency. But, given the choice between playing a game with rude idiots in abundance, and playing a less enjoyable game but with a much nicer crowd, well...
