Bwhahaha THERE BE RULES ME LAD! YAR!
Rawr. I think it's time to break out the 'Favourite Anime Thread', but I get to lay the ground rules.
1.) YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE SERIES ORMOVIE OR OVA TO FIT EACH CATEGORY.
2.) ONLY reply to the given categories. Do not add your own.
3.) Do not list all the series you've seen....
4.) Give a reason why you selected this series. This minimises the spam.
5.) If a series falls under two (or more) categories, that is fine. Just so long as it doesn't break rule 1.
6.) These lists reflect a persons current favourite selection. It changes constantly, but do not alter your selection. I want to see what you think is your favourite series RIGHT NOW! =D
7.) No manga, only anime.
8.) If a movie/ova falls under one of the 'anime' categories. It is fine to use them.
9.) If you can't pick a favourite for that category. That's fine too. Just don't abuse any of the above rules.
Violators go on an idiot list.... either because your an idiot, or your a spamming idiot.

I'll begin the festivities:
Mecha - Patlabor TV series
Patlabor has got to be one of my all time Top 5 favourite series. It is so incredibly well written. From the mecha, to the characters, to the relationships and all the rest. It just melds together so well. Seeing how this is the mecha category, I choose this because I absolutely LOVE the Ingram design and how it is all feasible on a technical level.
Sci-fi - Martian Successor Nadesico
A cult classic of sci-fi. I'm a sucker for the old stuff. It's sorta like Evangelion in space.... but all the characters aren't as emotionally stilted. Excellent plot, superb battles. Great stuff.
Romantic Comedy - Ranma 1/2
You may think this is an odd selection for the romantic comedy section, but the under-lying premise of Ranma 1/2 is Ranma and Akane's relationship. It has this wonderful 'will he won't she' atmosphere, which is always shattered by Ranma's inability with romance or by him being an absolute moron and ticking Akane off (Ranma no baka)
Comedy - Azumanga Daioh
Anyone that has seen this series will know. Simple plots, light-hearted, some scenes have you on your sides in laughter. A classic.
Fighting - Flame of Recca
Flame of Recca follows an interesting premise. An old ninja clan sends one of it's last remaining members into the future as a baby, he grows up to be Hannabishi Recca. He learns he has the power to create a flame from his arm, he teams up with some of his team-mates and other people and they go about protecting his 'hime' (Princess) from the evil cluthches of... evil. Well that's the short version, but it just has you hooked from beginning to end. Go Flame Dragons!!!!~!!~
Tournament - Yu Yu Hakusho
Awwww yeah. Get a bunch of guys together in a team, put them in an Arena and get them to fight to the death. Great s***. There is no real 'reason' for me to like it so much, it's just my favourite biffo series ;p
Adventure - Hunter X Hunter
A wonderful series by the same creator as Yu Yu Hakusho. Gon wants to become a Hunter. Hunters go around the world finding treasure, saving people, capturing criminals, etc. This basically sets up a universe where Gon gets to fight a lot... but it is a complex universe as it has all these underlying plots, technical explanations of techniques, etc. Very well written and I enjoyed the manga to anime conversion. The series has a very odd timeline though. It goes TV (62 eps) -----> OVA 1 (8 eps) -----> OVA 2 (8 eps) -----> Nothing. The 2nd OVA aired quite recently, so there is a very high chance the series will continue, but I digress. Just an excellent adventure series.
Fan-service - Jungle De Ikou
Mii The Flower Spirit. 3 Part OVA. Laughable plot, plenty of fan-service. Nuff said.
Kawaii - Digi Charat
The original series was a riot. Dejiko, an alien princess, finds work at a store and hilarity ensues. Simple plots, kawaii action provided in the form of character designs and whatnot =D
Sports - Hajime No Ippo
Hajime No Ippo is a boxing anime 65 eps long, with one movie. Epsiode long boxing fights, superb designs, addictive plot, comedy in tow. GO IPPO!!!! Death to Prince of Tennis
Movie - N/A
I can't answer this accurately.... there's just too many movies that I like.... If I had to pick on on the spur of the moment.... Hajime No Ippo: Champion's Road. Mainly cause it was the last movie I saw.....
OVA - Hunter X Hunter OVA 1
It's a little hard to explain.... but HxHO1 follows one of my favourite sagas in the Hunter x Hunter series. I can't explain it to anyone who doesn't know the Hunter X Hunter timeline, but well... it's just some great stuff. Yeah.. hard to explain to a non-follower.... It's good. Trust me.
Other - Hikaru No Go
Hikaru No Go doesn't fall under any other category because... well... it's about a Japanese board game. It sounds boring as all HELL I know, I thought that too before I started watching it, and watching it, and watching it. It's not a kiddies series like Yu-gi-oh or some crap like that, it is extremely well written from start to end.
Long Running - One Piece
Sail to island. Meet friend. Learn friend's problem. Beat crap out of problem. Get friend to join Pirate Crew. Repeat. It's One Piece, I can't get enough of it. I've seen up to Ep150... it doesn't get boring... I NEED MORE! MORE I TELL YOU!
All time favourite - Super Dimensional Fortress Macross
A lot of you saw this as Robotech growing up as a kid. I did too and I fell in love with it. In recent years I picked up the original japanese version on DVD and I fell in love with the series again. Superb mecha, excellent story, tragic romance, it has it all. It's old school anime, just the way I like it.
Current favourite - Naruto
Argh. I have a love hate relationship with the anime version of Naruto. I've read up to about Episode 200 in manga format, but only seen the 47 episodes that have aired in Japan. They are JUST getting up the really really really really interesting fights. I LOVE those fights, but I HATE the animation choices they have chosen in a few instances. For those who don't know, Naruto is a ninja series. Follows a young ninja called Naruto, as he follows his teacher and his 2 other team-mates around kicking arse with Ninja techniques and whatnot. Cool stuff.
So yeah, show me your favs people. Don't spoil my thread or I'll crush you!

Adventure: Scrapped Princess , Naruto
Sci-Fi: Gender Blue
anyway:
Mech: Voices of a Distant Star
Sucha good anime! Short, so it doesn't get cluttered by useless filler action or off-topic dialouge, it simply tells an amazing story that happens to involve mechs, but not just as a gimmick.
Sci-Fi: Lain
Freaky, deep, and extremely stylistic in a cyper-punk kinda way, one of the few non-manga that completely messed with my head when I was finished.
Romantic Comedy: Iketeru Futari
Just some nice, dirty, immature comedy about a guy trying to get a girl, howlingly funny but at the same time makes me you take the plot very seriously.
Comedy: FLCL
This was a tough one, I had to shoose between all of the great Gainax comedies, but you just cannot beat Eyebrow-Man. Too bad the americans effed it up.
Fighting: Gasaraki
Although it gets kinda bad near the end, it's good for those who like serious military movies, there's a lot of action, and it doesn't get really centered around the mechs until about halfways through the series.
Adventure: Abenobashi Mahou Shotengai
I'm pretty sure this qualifies, although it is on the light-hearted and comedic side of the adventure genre, it's another great Gainax comedy, except it actually has a point (although it does get lost sometimes in favor of gag episodes)
Fan-Service: ANYTHING WITH A CAT GIRL IN IT!!!
Meow.
Kawaii: Chobits (duh)
/me looks at his sig. Tell me that's not adorable!
(note: I may have confused the next 2 topics cuz I'm rather dumb)
Movie: Grave Of The Fireflys
I cried at the end. Such a good anime, you just don't get meanigful movies like that in the Us
OVA: End of Evangelion (At least I always though it was an ova...could be wrong, really don't care)
A good way to wrap up the series, made me slightly less peeved at the end of the series, and brought back the deepness that was missing from the final episodes instead of just spouting more meaningless psychobabble.
All Time Favorite: Akira
Could watch it over and over. It never gets old, and after you read the manga it gains so much. Just an all-around well done anime.
Current Favorite: Ebichu
I've been trying to get my hands on this series FOREVER and I've only gotten a few of the episodes, but they are just pee-yourself funny. Although sometimes a little unnesescarilly dirty.

Mecha: Appleseed:
This was one of the first anime movies i bought and is easily one of Masamune Shirow's masterpieces. While not TOTALLY mecha, the landmate suits do count.

Sci-fi (Series outside the realms of normal physics/timelines/in space/etc): Trigun:
Well i guess it kinda fits, doesn't it. I know i'm late on the Trigun bandwagon (5 years old, blah blah blah), but i'm still really liking this series. The story follows two insurance agents called Meryl and Milly as they track the activities and destruction caused by "The Humanoid Typhoon", Vash The Stampede. And it all goes from there as you learn more and more about Vash as he goes around helping people and doing good things. It's a must-watch series really, and i'm probably preaching to the converted anyway, but if you've not seen it, watch it.

Romantic Comedy: Chobits:
Well, what can i say about Chobits that i've not said a thousand times, i love it, i love the characters, the plot is fantastic, Hideki's a pervert and it makes me cry. Love it.

Comedy: Puni Puni Poemi:
Either the follow up or predecessor to Excel Saga (sorry, i forget), this is just mad. It's just pure madness. From surreal humour down to digs at otaku, it's just absolutely hillarious from beginning to end, i love it.

Fighting (A series that mainly revolves around fighting...): Street Fighter 2:
Well, since i don't really like fighting anime, i chose this one. It's pretty good, definately the best involving fighting that i've seen, but then again, the whole genre just doesn't really appeal to me.

Tournament (A team enters, they beat the other team, they move onto the next round): Angelic Layer:
Ooooh, this one was nearly Hikaru no Go, but i decided to go with CLAMP's fantastic series, Angelic Layer. With top quality animation and a great plot, this, to me, seems a lot better than what "Tournament" anime there is out there. A genre dominated by the likes of Pokemon, it's great to see anime like Angelic Layer doing the same thing, just a hell of a lot better.

Adventure (The heros go off on an adventure to solve a problem/rid evil/get something back/etc): Panyo Panyo DiGi Charat:
See Kawaii!

Fan-service (Bouncy bouncy): N/A:
Since i dunno what this is, i'll pass.

Kawaii (Cute stuff): Panyo Panyo DiGi Charat:
Whilst Infinitium went for the original DiGi Charat, i'm gonna have to go with Panyo Panyo. This is FAR cuter than the original series and takes place on Dejiko's home world. It has a few familiar faces from DiGi Charat (Dejiko, Puchiko and Gema) but also a new set. Ontop of this the style of the characters has changed from the cute SD forms they already had into an EVEN CUTER, more simple form. The plot is about Dejiko on her quest to make the world happy, and it just oozes cuteness.

Sports: N/A:
Sorry, i've not watched any sports anime and don't really have much intention to either.

Movie: Grave Of The Fireflies (Tombstone Of Fireflies, whatever...):
Well this is probably one of the greatest movies i've seen of all time, bar none. A tragic story of two children in Japan during World War 2. It's disturbing at times and really sad at other times, but in all this is a masterpiece of anime from the people who brought you My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away (Gibli studios, no?).

OVA: New Dominion Tank Police:
Roughly carrying on from Dominion Tank Police, this OVA released some 5 or so years after the original follows a police Tank Division and the misadventures of the near-enough-naked Cat Sisters. Stories of conspiracies and general comedy backed up by some huge-arse tanks (Except sweet little Bonaparte ) makes this a great action story along with a comedy. Oh, and expect some general mecha to, this is another of Masamune Shirow's works.

Other (If it doesn't fit the other categories): Urotsukidoji:
Enough said...

Long Running (40000000 ep long series): Kodomo no Omocha (Kodocha):
While i've only seen around 30 episodes of this series (i'm aching to see the rest) it's overall cuteness and comedy mixed with serious story lines make this an absolutely compelling anime to watch, it weighs in at only around 100 or so episodes, but since your usual series is only 26, i'm putting it in this section. It follows young child-start Sana-chan through her life and loves, starting with her as a kid and eventually growing up and getting married, the anime follows her aging and you see the characters gradually getting closer and closer. Kodocha's really a great series and incredibly compelling. Watch it.

I didn't know what half the categories are!
Sorry for this post but I'm just interested in how you know which films are good? Esuna, you live in the UK but how do you know all these weird named anime films? As you may, or may not, know I am quite interested in starting a collection, and I've spent quite a bit of money on anime DVDs.

anyway.. yeah. great stuff. yukito kishiro is a genius.
is me harping on about one series only getting old yet? cowboy bebop! its deeeeep, its greatness is due to the insane quality in its every aspect; animation, artwork, characters, dialogue, score, plot, direction, blah, blah, blah... and you can buy all the episodes for about £26 now, so go watch it, right now, god dam you!

what can I say? I've never seen it, no reason to get all pissy about it.
Comedy/Current Favorite: Kodomo no Omocha. It's so random and crazy. It's like Excel Saga * 1000. Except, it does have an actual serious story to it. I've only gotten up to episode 26 so far, and there are well over 50 episodes.
Adventure: Noir. (I put it under Adventure, because... *SPOILER*they were working to find out Kirika's past, and then at the end, to become Noir.*END SPOILER* The action scenes weren't long, but were very well done and elegant. The way Kirika fights is amazing, too. The story is flawless.
OVA: Love Hina Again. Simply put, this is as funny as Love Hina. Excellent.
The End of Evangelion: Commonly referred too as the Eva Movie, in actuallity EoE replaces the last 2 episodes of the series (25 & 26) with a more action orientated plot. Apparently it was made to appease the fans ticked off with the original TV series ending. You can classify it as any of the 3 major categories. TV because it is 2 episodes long (Just combined together) Movie because it is about an hour long (Average anime movie length) and OVA because of an increased animation budget, etc. 99% of the time, however, you should refer to it as a movie as to avoid confusion. But I won't ring your neck if you decided to use if for any of the 3 categories... (Though I personally refer to it as a movie)
Movie length: Just quick note on the above point. 50-60min anime movies are fairly common in Japan. This is because they usually show 2 movies back to back. So you get a good long 2 hour movie session for your money.
Kodomo No Omocha: It is 102 episodes long off the top of my head.
Cowboy Bebop: Was produced by Studio Sunrise. Other series they have made include: Argento Soma, Big O, City Hunter, The Vision of Escaflowne, several Gundam series, Inu Yasha, Patlabor TV, Outlaw Star, Overman King Gainer, Scryed and Witch Hunter Robin. That's only a sample of the ones I can REMEMBER. They have been in the business a very very long time and series they are acredited to runs a mile long....
Studio Bones: A company made up of several old Studion Sunrise members. Similar style to Sunrise, but I believe they have much greater skill in their animation (Which is seriously debatable) Series they have made include: Angelic Layer, Rahxephon, The Rahxephon Movie, Scrapped Princess and Wolf's Rain
Scrapped Princess: It's creator (The man with the plan) is actually a doujinshi artist called Mogudan. Just a little tid-bit.... I just found it odd that a porn artist came up with this series. What series does he do? Mainly Rei Ayanami from Evangelion, but that's as far as I'm going to go there....
Doujinshi/Hmanga: If you ever get a chance. Walk into a manga store in Japan and go to their adult category. You will see how many people are turned on by cartoons....
Well enough for now... more will come later.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (ok, who saw that coming? ). Truth be told, I haven't actually seen all that much mecha, and I can't stand the idea of robots fighting in the air or in space. NGE's strength is in the incredibly detailed characters and storyline. It's like the The Matrix of anime (well, I suppose Ghost in the Shell is, more technically ). It's a real mind-job.
Sci-fi
I don't watch a lot of this... the only one I can think of, really, is Banner of the Stars. That's the sequel series to Crest of the Stars, not me getting the name wrong . Truth be told, it's not really fantastic and at times it can be very boring (it was based on a novel rather than a manga, so it's extremely verbose) but it is very detailed.
Romantic Comedy
Haven't really seen enough of any romantic comedy series. I would say "Ranma", but I've only read the manga.
Comedy
Excel Saga!!!
Fighting
Rurouni Kenshin, I guess. It's pretty much the only one of this type that I've seen (yes, I haven't seen DBZ, and I want to keep it that way ). It's about a Ronin who has sworn he will never kill again, and uses only a reverse-blade sword. It's not very serious, but the fight scenes are cool.
Tournament
Hikaru no Go, for lack of something else to fill this category. I guess it's my "favourite", but I don't really like it that much. There are only so many times you can snigger about life-or-death games of (the equivalent of) Chess.
Adenture
Inu-Yasha!!!! It's about a girl named Kagome who falls into an ancient well and ends up in the feudal age, where she meets a half-demon called Inu-Yasha. To cut a long story short, they end up going on a quest to find the shard of Shikon no Tama, a glass ball which gives youkai (demons) great power. It's by Rumiko Takahashi, the same person who did Ranma 1\2. It's a great series - the characters are fairly deep, and the series is so long that the characters change as people throughout.
Fan-service
Vandread. It's about a spaceship full of women, and there are only three males on board. For some reason, all the women wear revealing and\or figure-hugging clothes. I don't know much more of the story (I doubt there is any ) since I've started watching half-way through.
Kawaii
I suppose this is where I mention Digi-Charat, which actually s***s me. I just find it irritating.... but if you want kawaii, look no further.
Sports
There's this anime I've seen maybe fifteen minutes total of called "prince of tennis", which is riduculous (and in the process, hillarious). Think of a fighting anime with people yelling out the name of their secret uber-technique as they perform it. Now think of those techniques being tennis moves. Now think of them being attributed to Pete Sampras and Leighton Hewett. See what I mean about ridiculous?
Movie
Akira.
OVA
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The GiTS world is very cool, but unfortunately you don't see a whole lot of it in the movie. These episodes are, well, more Ghost in the Shell and there's nothing wrong with that . Also, they're (mostly) related to the one case which is followed through.
Other
I'm going to cheat, here, and mention another comedy: Great Teacher Onizuka. Not as plain-ridiculously funny as Excel Saga, not quite a romantic comedy because Onizuka's too much of a lech, and it's a little bit deeper than just a zany comedy.
Long Running
Inu-Yasha, again. It's epic.
All time favourite
I'm really not sure. Either Inu-Yasha or NGE.
Current favourite
Inu-Yasha! (who saw that coming? )
[edit]I was going to add another category (Inf, how could you forget to include Mahou Shoujo?) but I can't really think of any series I like which really fits this category. Someday's Dreamers and Witch Hunter Robin both feature girls who can use magic, but they don't really qualify (no transformation sequence or uber-power used agianst the weekly boss-enemy).[/edit]
Sci-fi - TriGun (It's great, Vash is so stupid but hilarious)
Romantic Comedy - Ranma 1/2 (I don't have any of it on DVD and stuff but i've seen it)
Fighting - InuYasha (It's cool, even if dubbed)
Tournament - Dragon Crap(Ball) Z
Adventure - InuYasha (Get the Shikon Jewel)
Fan-service - All Purpose Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Kawaii - Seraphim Call
Movie - Akida (Akira) - It is Akira
All time favourite - Princess Mononoke
Current favourite - Gundam Wing
Dubbed? You poor thing. Honestly, "Kaze no Kizu!" sounds so much better than "Wound of the Wind!"
[edit]Hang on a sec. Dubbed? I thought it was only available as fansubs.[/edit]
don't avoid the good ones just so you can call them stupid as a whole.

What the hell are you talking about.... @_0
British Cinema can be good also! (28 days later anyone?)
But, Back On Topic.....
Sci-Fi: Ghost In The Shell, It oozes Sci-Fi style and coolness and it has a suitably high tech storyline.
Movie: Definately not End Of Evangelion, that film sucked butt. Ghost in the Shell is my current favorite movie for the reason mentioned above
Fighting: Cowboy Bebop, what can I say, I like stylish gunfights. Oh and Spikes "fist of doom" against Andy.
OAV: Tenchi Muyo, apart from the Star Wars esque swordfighting and large amounts of sexual innuendo it is overall a good series
All Time Favorite: Neon Genesis Evangelion, This needs nil introduction
Scryed. In the future, an island off of the coast of Japan is the subject of strange happenings resulting in the creation of a new human architype, people calling themselves Alters. They have the ability to alter reality in order to summon their Alters, things that can be used for combat against other Alters (it is in no way like Pokemon). An agency exists to police Alters, made up of Alters itself, called HOLY. But does HOLY really just police Alters, or does it exist to do something more...
Blue Gender is also ok, but don't really like the characters, nice plot. Big O has got another coo main character, bigass robots and lost of destruction along with a twisty plot line, but, while having a fight in every episode does help keep the action up it takes away alot of time that could be used to devolop the plot. Mmm, I don't know why I don't like InuYasha, just too sterotypical of Japanesse anime I guess. FLCL is a very nice, but WAY too short, show. (6 episodes!! more, MORE!!!) Very funny at times but hitting a kid on the head with a guitar and then having a robot sprouting out is a little... well, strange. *Taps forehead* And Lupin III is so old school it has to be good. (not sure how old it it, but I know it's pretty old) Well there are all the shows I enjoy watching, at least a little.
this is the only anime I really really love
its hilarious, i just love it ( the girl ranma is so adorable )
