Server release

ClayClay Join Date: 2002-07-27 Member: 1013Members
Im in a clan that runs more than one server and Im going to get one for this mod. my thing is you need to release the server file like 2 days befor the mod comes out so we can all get in the 5 hour line at fileplant. we dont want all the clinets(PLAYER) using the bandwith the hosts(servers) need and ofcorse the servers need to be up befor the players. me thinks the traffic is going to hold up all the FTP servers

Yes there was a post like this, and the response from MonsE
    was this:

"Yeeeaaahhhh. Ahem. Try to give us a little credit for some foresight, guys. We will be doing everything we can to get the servers in the hands of server ops prior to release. This will be easy for Linux boxes, but will be a might bit harder with Win32. Either way, we have it under control."

If I remember rightly there are going to be plenty of mirrors everywhere. This is because fileplanet is evil.

    Yes... evil fileplanet......

yes .. damn them for making people wait to leech things for free from their eval bandwidth ..

    Guys.

Everything costs money. You cant expect a place thats as popular as Fileplanet to be able to give you all this badwidth for free. You have any ideas how much that would cost ...?

Its not like they're even forcing you to pay for it. So you have to wait in a line, well la-te-da ...

If you dont want to wait, pay for the service and get things any time you want.

If you want to leech, wait.

    Simple really.

Just get it from Barry's World or some place like that.

It wouldn't be as bad if the FIRST site anything is mirrored on is Fileplanet.. It USED to be a good site but I guess advertising income is not what it used to be.

Just download from ANY site but Fileplanet, the only reason you should use them is if they are the ONLY site available.

Don't diss Fileplanet, their servers are extremely fast and extremely reliable. And at non-peak hours, even the waiting time is short. Only their script-cookie-popup based login system is bad.

    I often have no wait.

I don't mind it all that much.

Heaven help you if you try to get a HL update just after its released there tho. I had an 18 hour que once!

Otherwise, its not that bad. I find any AM time (EST) is usually pretty good.

I d/l from fileplanet at 3 in the morning. Extremley early or late in the day and there is no wait at all. So when you log onto file planet at 3 in the morning and see only 1 other person in line its me And a word to all the 56kers who complain about long downloads, just do what I did when I was 56k, leave your computer downloading overnight, its just like Christmas when you wake up you have a magical present.

Oh, that, and Gamespy industries is subjugating the entire gaming community. Everywhere you look, the most popular fansites are part of Gamespy industries (fileplanet).

Smaller HL fansites don't have nearly as much selection as does Planet Half-Life. Not only this, but many, many mods are supported by Planet Half-Life too, and they have to suck up to Gamespy or else they get shut down.

How long is it going to be until smaller mirror sites fold? How long until Gamespy Industries "befriends" the largest fansites, thus making them puppets? How long until Fileplanet controls the modes of supply? How long until they make paying mandatory?

Sounds like a conspiracy theory, but it's not. Once Gamespy acquires all meaningful mirrors and sites, they will charge for admission to the site. "Don't want to pay?" they say, "Get it from somewhere else!" But there is no somewhere else.

What happened? You mean the serious sam thing?

    yeah, that's scary.

RRRRAAAAARRRR!!! I hope they burn for this! Destroying www.halflife.net was the most atrocious thing ever done to a gaming community and especially the CS skinning community. Its hard to imagine the number of skins lost when they went down..... And now Serious Sam has been crushed under thier corperate boot. Is this what gaming has become?
