Call Of Duty

suprisingly good, for another ww2 game
At Quakecon they had a pre-release of the Call of Duty demo on display (complete w/ their eerie looking bombed-out house E3 booth) but thought "meh, yet ANOTHER stupid ww2 shooter. Geez I wish they'd start ww3 so we'd have a new game to play..."

But for some reason when the demo came out I grabbed it to test the speed of my new cable modem. So when I played it, I was shocked. It is suprisingly good. I think the main thing it had going for it was the element of teamwork, with your AI allies actually kicking ****, instead of just wasting oxygen. And with the sound and everything, the environment was quite immersive. It actually FELT like I was in that godforsaken town.

Will I buy it? With Jedi Academy, Homeworld 2, HL2, and Max Payne 2 on the horizon, not a chance. But its good nonetheless so maybe when its bargin bin I'd recommend people to give it a try.

I love it, especially the ''YOU HAVE TO AIM LIKE THEY DO IN RL TO KILL SOMEONE". And it's soo damned realistic. I love it.

Well, being its probably coming out before HL2, I'm gonna get it. Jedi Academy isn't there for me, and Homeworld 2 isn't coming out until after HL2, from what I've heard(Homeworld is one of the best games ever...I remember getting it in the bargain bin 2 weeks after it was out, thinking "Well, here goes $15 bucks...". When I got home and started playing, I couldn't stop. Heaven, and some of the best gaming I've ever had.)

But Call of Duty is a amazing game. I too, much like DOOM, thought "Not another one...we need some Desert Storm games...", but when it got on Fileplanet, I got it immediately(friend is letting me use his pay subscription while he is at Military College), and started it up. 5 seconds after the first level starting, I just about crapped my pants. It was amazing....bombers flying overhead, parachutes falling, huge rounds flying at our planes, lights everywhere, burning in the distance, and lots and lots of Ruins. But they weren't just ruins- they were bunkers for those damned Nazi's. And they took out 15 of my squad. I remember getting to the gate, reloading my carbine, looking to the right, and seeing a comrade dragging a soldier to where I was, just before he was shot 5 times through the gate, the wood splintering everywhere.

It was wonderful. And to think, it has multiplayer maps with scripted events...can you say, "Holy frickin..."(and the scripted ones happen differently depending on what your team does)

    here's the moment of truth.

if you shoot someone in the heart with a .45acp...

    do they die?

    [awaiting answer patiently]

Well, that all depends. Were you running at them? Strafing? Crouching? Prone? Standing still? And what the hell kind of gun is that? But ya, if you get someone in the heart, their down. But you can nail their leg as many times as you want, before(while their on the ground) they decide to shoot you anyway.

Its not too realistic in that un-fun "you die in 1 shot to the leg" way, but headshots pwn.

What gets me is that I'll pump a few bullets into a guy and he'll stagger and fall down, then I'll turn around and suddenly he's shooting me again, and I realize "no longer can you magically tell when someones dead by the animation they play when you shoot them." In real life, people react to getting shot instead of just take lead till they're dead, and finally a game shows this.

I'm not sure about enemies but your teammates don't die. The damage is probably decided by zones, chest is just one zone, the heart probably doesn't have a seperate one. But helmets seem to act like real helmets.

    Oh to the countrary.

Teammates *DO* die. Sure they take more hits than the average FPS teammate (which makes em even cooler) but I went on a TK spree and killed the whole squad, but just like cockroaches more showed up to "help" me. :P

Yup. I personally think thats good, because you still feel that comaroderie, as long as you don't teamkill.

last time i checked, it didn't matter how you were shootin' at em. if you put a bullet through someone's chest, they usually die. they didn't wear kevlar in ww2. infantry didn't wear flak jackets, either. so thus, you have no penetration issues.

in operation flashpoint you'll take max damage at point blank. is there a difference between close range and long to extreme range damage?

by the way, does this game have bullet velocity? as in, if you fire at someone a mile away, does the bullet teleport and hit them instantly?
  • QuaunautQuaunaut The longest seven days in history... Join Date: 2003-03-21 Member: 14759Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
Well, it hits instantly with everything but the carbine, and maybe the sniper rifle(if there is one, it'd probably have it, being carbine is that way).

And yes, it will do a lot more damage at point blank range, kevlar or not. Those muzzle flashes hurt, ya know.

You need anything better than a Radeon 7000.

    I have a Radeon 7000.

    I hate you all.

    IQ, no you don't.

I have something thats the equivelent of a GeForce 2 MX. And I ran it at about 10-20 fps, until it got bugged. ::shrug::

I just played the demo (till my computer decided to crash as usual) and it's amazing! I've got a Geforce 4 MX and it ran pretty well, just a little jumpy for the first few seconds.

My problems is that the demo was way too easy. Even on the hardest diffucuitly, the fact that your guns are so insanly accruate is probably the most unrealisitc thing. I had little problem landing one shot kills almost every time (even on that guy in the tank once you get past the field and are going into the houses). For verteran I think that 1) The enemy AI need to be a lot more accurate and 2) The accuracy of your gun needs to be decreased a little. As for squadmates, all they do is take up oxygen :-/ They _look_ like they are doing something, but they don't do too much. You are still the one man army that the tried to get away from in this game. Something that I thought was sorta funny -- when it comes time to flank the MG nest, I went prone - facing their fire - and killed one, I shot the other - he didnt die, but was knocked down. My squadmates went in - the MGer got back up, and continued firing. All my squadmates die, and of course more appear out of thin air and just keep walking through the door that has MG fire ripping through it - his process repeats for about 3 mins untill I get bored watching them get mowed down :-/

Pretty nice demo. Looks like Medal of Honor with more detail. I always liked MOH, so don't get me wrong. Seems like just another Quake game set in WWII
