Wierdest Computer Problem Ever

MrPinkMrPink Join Date: 2002-05-28 Member: 678Members

You haven't heard this, tech support...
Every night, at midnight, my computer crashes. Only at midnight, and it seems to be only when I'm using it because I leave it on at night but go to bed early, then wake up the next morning and it's fine. When it crashes, I see the blue screen of death, but instead of words it just has a small grey box in the middle and a cursor. Any suggestions?

It's probably a virus try scanning your HD, if that doesnt work run ScanDisk or restart several times.
• MrPinkMrPink Join Date: 2002-05-28 Member: 678Members
Did all of that except restarting several times because this has been happening for probably 6 months or so now so I've restarted numerous times in that time period, it's just now that I realized it always happened at midnight.

Maybe you have setting that turns off the computer at a certain time?

If nothing else works, then reformat.

Thats not the weirdest. I've seen a computer which turned itself back on exactly 15 minutes after it was turned off. Every time.

what OS are you running?
• MrPinkMrPink Join Date: 2002-05-28 Member: 678Members
Windows ME (worst OS ever)

I'll probably just buy XP and everything will be fine.

LoL, oh i loved the hype about Y2K Bug, it was all great wasn't it. There were even films about it.

Who remembers a telemovie made around 1999. It was based around a nuclear power station, and the millenium bug caused it to explode. How lame, lol

I have the same problem, except I'm not sure if it is at midnight. But it happens no matter what. The computer can be just being idle and it will happen. I have Win ME also.

Try running auto-update but yeah, I would just get a new OS because ME is crap.

Check to see if you have any schedueled tasks set to run then and try using the housecall virus check, incase your pattern files are out of date. clickeh
Does it happen at midnight or just when the system clock says it is? Try setting it to 23:59 if you havn't already and see what happens.

but we can't realy know anytihng simply B/C ME = trash. I have seen somany things that can only be chalked up to that spawn of Satan OS (It forces your computer to sacrifice HardDrives to it, I aint kiddin)

How do I get this virus out? My anti-virus software isn't detecting it.
• SkulkBaitSkulkBait Join Date: 2003-02-11 Member: 13423Members
Well... as has been stated before, since its ME, you really can't say for certain its a virus. I have seen things happen to ME systems (that are aparently self infliceted) that I could swear was the work of pixies.

If it is a virus you'd have to try the three Rs of windows fixin': Reformat, Reinstall, Repent. Which would probably clear up the problem even if it wasn't a virus....

I had exactly the same problem a while ago with Windows ME. It would crash right when it hit midnight, giving me the blue screen. If I remember correctly, I fixed it by reloading the registry from a month or so prior, then updated everything just to be sure.

If that's not an option, then... hell, I dunno.

Still don't know what caused this; I doubt it was a virus, but I'm not ruling that out. maybe it was all the porn el oh el

Update your anti-virus software if not then just burn all the files you dont feel like downloading all over again on a CD and reformat.

This topic makes the baby MonsE cry. Go repost in tech support, and provide all system info as required by that forum.

Soliciting technical help in the NS off-topic forums is like asking strangers for marital advice at a subway stop. You may occasionally get a good answer, but mostly it's a bunch of imbecile wife-beaters telling you to 'kill that beyotch'.
