Score board

I have been lurking around the forums for several months now and registered for a quick question. Since NS is mostly a team based game for marines, will personal frag counts be used as the basics for the scoreboard? Imo using frag counts for each individual player will cause many players to run around and try to get enough frags to look "cool." Could the score board be more team based (ie infiltration mod for UT) such as showing the percetages of team work being use or overal frags or points? Sorry if this has been discussed before, i tried searching for it, and i am up to date with mostly everything thats been posted (thats what lurkers do best ).

The one thing that is certain is that (until some idiot makes a meta mod plugin to do this) no marine will know their score, just that the team they were on won or lost.
Correction: there *is* a scoreboard. Marines do not have individual frag/death scores, while aliens do.
If I were to make a game, I would have a scoreboard, but you wouldn't get score for killing. You would just get points for doing stuff and completing orders.
Hey, why not do that? Just make it so marines get points for doing Commander orders or stuff like that? Yes, I can see a problem where the commander gives out simple orders just to get marines points, but... well, it might work. Just a thought.
commander would send his units around and around and gains that way massive points
How does a team-work percentage...thingy, work? What is it based on etc? (Sounds like it would be a good idea for a lot of team based games/mods around atm)
I can't remember how many servers I have been kicked out of because of my 200-400 ping.
Sides, if an admin is kicking you on ping alone then i don't think it's that good of a server.
And anyway, the point is not my ping but ping descrimination.
Also cuts down on fellow HPB complaining about LPB killing everything only because of low ping.
Hiding the pings is a good idea.. what real purpose does showing pings serve anyway?
The key is not personal fragcount, it's more of a "highscore" so you can tell your becoming a more efficient marine.
So you can tell how much damage you've done, how accurate you are, how many times you've died, how much damage you've dished out in comparison to how much you've taken etc.
You need something to tell you that your becoming a much more efficient killer even if your still a teamplayer.

Out.
It's handy to be able to see everyone else's pings. Anyone who kicks you because you have a high ping is silly. You have a 56k modem, I assume. You are using less bandwith than someone on cable. Therefore, there's more server bandwidth for me and MY cable modem.
The only problem would be the lag compensation code for HL. I've died from bullets going around the corner before... lag compensation hurts us cable modem people! Get rid of it!! <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
Well ANYWAY. Just make it so only you can see your own ping.. other people's ping doesn't matter at all.
As for the ping issue, go find some good servers, like HA servers. I usually play on those, and the guys are always great. If a game is being severely lagged by one guy on 33.6K, I think the admin should be able to see their pings to determine who.
Brain... hurts... cannot... function...

I've heard this was a myth before and that it's the DSL/Cable dudes who REALLY lag the server. Or at least lag them alot more then a HPW would. Although in reality, a single player cannot lag the server significantly. People with 1700 pings, now that's different.
Actually I have a theory that sorta goes like this. Suppose a server is stuffed to capacity(bandwidth wise) at 20 players. Now if one player has 1500 or so ping constantly, that one player will lag the server. However, he will only be capable of slowing down the other players by 1/20th. So a 200 ping dude would go up to 210 ping. In the case of a server well under it's bandwidth capacity, a HPW would have very little effect on the other players. Now if you have 5 HPW's, this is 5/20ths, so the 200 ping guy could go up to 250 ping. Now that kinda sucks, but 1500 ping dudes are rare, and hey this is just a theory. Usually plenty of games are well under server bandwidth limits anyways. You rarely play a 20 man game of CS for example.
My philosphy for all you admins and players, STFU! A 400+ ping player should be COMMENDED for his willingness to play under such adverse conditions. He provides fair game for lower experienced players, helping to build confidence etc.
He is also very steadfast and determined. If a HPW is doing half-decent, he is obviously full of /skill. I mean lay the f0ck off him, playing with 400 ping is ####, Natural selection(not the game!<!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> says that he will eventually throw in the towel. Ok maybe not at 400, but ALL players at 1500 ping will eventually quit. The less you harrass him, the more likely he will stick around and provide easy kills. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
My suggestion would be to, at the end of each game, have an rts-style scoreboard for both sides. You could list stuff like (for the marine side): Players Spawned, Aliens Killed, Buildings Constructed, Buildings Destroyed, Resources Gathered, Resources Spent, etc etc blah blah etc
Would be a nice touch to accentuate the rts feel of the mod, and it would be fun for its own sake. Everyone loves to go, "holy crap, we lost 75 men and still pulled that off?!"

Well said. I cannot stand the people who moan about other peoples latency. It does not affect you, it makes no difference to the server at all.
As it goes, 400 ping in NS is STILL rather smooth, because of the sweet netcode Flayra has pulled out of his magic coding bag. Beautiful it is.
I have no time to read what you liked in your last post, but I assume it was agreeing with me and my "cable uses more bandwidth theory". Congrats on understanding how the internet works, and THANK YOU for pointing that out to others. You rock.
Eliminate public ping, eliminate ping descrimination.
