Cooling down.
I've been really active in here, and I like the discussions. Recently though, my posts have become nothing but flame bait, insults, and rhetoric. Looking back, I'm well on my way to bansville. I don't want to be banned, so I'm gonna be taking some time off from this place. I'll post on the other forums, just not here. Because they have many flaws in the way they want to put them together.

If there was to be any kind of perfect society, I believe it would be a conservative socialist one. To explain that deeper, you should probably read "Out of the Ashes" a great series about post apoltiptic world.

Unfortunely, left wingers AREN"T a dying breed, not when you own the media and the teachers.

Yeah right , so IndyMedia is the official , mainstream news source while Fox News is an "alternative" one ?

If the teachers are "owned" by the left wingers , what about the preachers ? They usually support the conservative opinions... both are involved in the younger people's education , but the preachers teachings can't be questioned since they take their inspiration from Holy Scriptures and not militant marxist historians. *cough*

Well, since this thread has been completely steered off course and yet somehow manages to remain open, I will contribute to its downfall.

Saying the Left Wing owns the Media is not accurate. They do however maintain a stranglehold on U.S. national television news. But I'm sure you'll deny that too.

Saying the Left Wing owns the teachers is also not accurate. What is true, however, is that the Left Wing owns the Public School teachers. Teacher's Union control varies from state to state but here in Michigan, the only way for a teacher to not pay dues or in any way be associated to a teachers union is to not work in a public school. I know this because my girlfriend has been working tirelessly to find a public school teaching position that doesn't require union affiliation. She hasn't been able to find a position because so many schools in the area won't settle their contracts for the current school year. Thus, schools without settled contracts cannot hire for new positions. She has been in constant contact with The Mackinac Center for Public Policy. This article is one anecdote describing the MEA's opinion of an organization that tries to help teachers avoid union membership.

Check out the Michigan Education Association website if you're not convinced of their political affiliations. The National Education Association isn't much better.

    Some stats

It's obviously true that teachers' unions donate much more money to democrats, but are you implying that this prohibits principled conservative teachers from accepting jobs at public schools? Statistically speaking, it doesn't seem to create that much of a divide. Though, I can empathize with a teacher who sees their dues going to causes they oppose-- especially when I see where my tax dollars are headed these days.

However, I believe the point put forth was that somehow, liberal teachers have a stranglehold on the students in this country, and are somehow forcing their subversive views upon the students. When you look at the stats, this doesn't really add up.

Then again, just vehemently repeat it enough times and it becomes true

And the far right seems to own the lion's share of talk radio and TV, which is much more dangerous imho, because they don't necessarily have to deal so heavily in those pesky little facts.

Welcome to hijacked thread land . . .

Maybe you misunderstood and that's ok because your link actually reinforces my point. It isn't Liberal teachers that are in control, it's Liberal control over the teachers. Your link details that quite nicely. Thanks.

Then you're misunderstanding my point, but I won't be quite so condescending about it. . .

QUOTE

Presumably, teachers want to teach, to help their students—that’s why they enter the profession. In the classroom, they’re not afraid to innovate, motivate, and adjust. If we believe voter registration data and voting patterns, the unions’ stand may not be the typical teacher’s stand.

Remember, the implication seemed to be that liberals aren't dying out because they conspiratorially indoctrinate our population through the media and schools . . .

The unions may direct the teachers' spending disproportionately, but that doesn't seem to translate into a liberal ideology being forced upon their students-- which seems to be where the true damage would be done, if the liberals truly controlled teachers.

If this is simply about union spending and a liberal PAC, I'm sure we can find many more similarly egregious ratios on both sides of the fence in many other directions.
  • SpoogeSpooge Thunderbolt missile in your cheerios Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 67Members
Yep, we're walking in different directions. And I apologize if you thought I was condescending--that really wan't my intent

I consider indoctrination a seperate issue (though a similarly important one) which has more to do with school boards, teachers, textbook publishers, and PAC contributions. I was focussing on the word "own" not "Liberal" in regards to the teachers. I've got lots of stories (by way of my GF ) in regards to indoctrination. Though, they have more to do with the training that teachers receive.

Fair enough. I took this to be the initial thrust, so I just wanted to provide some stats to demonstrate that politically, there isn't a direct, clear-cut majority of either party in our public classrooms.
