Ok this is for all the people (like me) that have lost their install CDs, and are worried about steam possibly needing you to re-enter it. Note that this has NOTHING to do with warez and does not even require you to go online. You CD key is stored in your system's registry, and that is why you don't need to re-enter your key if you uninstall then reinstall halflife on your system. Using the following method to view the registry is no more or less safe than using windows explorer to view your windows folder. If you think that you might have a spastic fit and accidently select something and then accidently hit the delete key and then accidently hit enter to confirm the dialogue, then by all means do worry about what I'm about to tell you. If you feel safe in the knowledge that you safely avoided frying your computer last time you ran Windows Explorer then you shouldn't have ANY problems running the Registry Editor.
To view this entry:

Open your Start menu, and click on "Run..."

Type in "regedit" and hit enter.

This program works just like Windows Explorer, so on the left pane, keep opening folders until you get to "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\Settings"

On the right hand side, you can now browse the item list for that folder just like Windows Explorer. Scroll down until you find one called "Key"

Write down the 13 digit number in the data column (or double click Key so you can copy and paste the value to notepad)
Now if Valve wants to keep things nice and smooth, they'll simply code the steam installer to read your CD key from the registry and there'll be no problems. However repeatedly reading that steam requires you to have a valid CD key is making me wonder if they really want us to enter the silly thing into the installer ourselves...
It's strange that they would tell us that we need a valid CD key to convert to steam when you can't obtain a WonID without having a valid CD key in the first place...
