<div class="IPBDescription">"thou shalt not kill"?</div> Let first say that I am not American and I am an atheist, and this post is in no way an attack upon America or the Christian faith. I merely would like to gain knowledge in an area which I have never fully understood.
In the bible, the exact command that is given by God through moese is “Thou shalt not kill”. There is no point as far as I know which says “thou shalt not kill (except in certain justified circumstances)”. I’ll be honest in saying, I have no idea how many American Christians actually oppose war, but I would take a guess that the recent war in iraq was supported by a majority of American Christians. (feel free to correct me on that point). If this is so, then by supporting war, this is supporting the killing of soldiers and civilians from either country.
Although I personally don’t believe that the commandments are the words of God, I do respect there relevance to how we should live our lives (accept the sex one). Killing for me personally is wrong in every circumstance (someone I am sure will make the point , what if I were trapped in a corner with a person about to kill me, and I was force to kill him to save my own life, well this may be hard to accept, but I would not kill, ever.)
So how do Christians justify killing some one? George Bush is a Christian yet he was, (as governor of Texas) let people receive the lethal injection for (wait for it)… killing some one?? It just all seems so illogical to me, especially when the whole faith is based upon the idea of being able to forgive and repent.
Oh, and a quote from Shakespeare’s prospero “The rarer action is In virtue than in vengeance”

Please don’t turn this thread into a debate about the war in iraq <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> thx

It would make little sense to prescribe killing altogether and then introduce the death penalty for certain crimes, as the mosaic law did, would it? That would force the henchman to sin.
